A Tarrant County jury took 17 minutes to convict Frederick Spears of capital murder in the stabbing of his estranged wife, Mary. In Pinellas County, Steven Gress pleaded guilty to kidnapping and first-degree murder in the death of 16-year-old Miranda Corsette and asked a judge, not a jury, to decide whether he dies for it. Fairfax County police arrested a 19-year-old coworker in the Great Falls killing of Carmen Lizet Puch. Atlanta officers pulled two sisters from a locked trailer and charged the babysitter who had befriended their mother on Facebook. In Plymouth, a defense psychologist told jurors Lindsay Clancy could not appreciate the wrongfulness of killing her three children. Queensland Police charged two people after remains believed to be Chad Bishop’s were found under a backyard cubby house. Erin Patterson’s Melbourne appeal opened on a hotel mix-up. An Old Bailey jury convicted a man of a second, nearly identical flatmate stabbing. Baton Rouge crews recovered a missing teen from a landfill. Jefferson County, Colorado, charged a Lakewood husband with first-degree murder.

Arlington Jury Convicts in 17 Minutes

A Tarrant County jury on Wednesday convicted Frederick Spears, 57, of capital murder in the September 22, 2025, stabbing death of his estranged wife, Mary Spears, 53, at her Arlington home. Deliberations lasted 17 minutes. Because prosecutors had waived the death penalty, Judge Amy Allin imposed the automatic sentence: life without parole.

The jury found the killing occurred in the course of obstruction or retaliation. Five days earlier, Spears had been arrested after a knife threat and placed under an emergency protective order. Prosecutors said he then bought a knife-and-saw kit, waited in the backyard on the 1000 block of Shortleaf Pine Drive, and stabbed her when she stepped outside. Gress Pleads Guilty, Wants Death

Steven Gress, 37, pleaded guilty Wednesday morning in Pinellas County to kidnapping and first-degree murder in the February 2025 death of Miranda Corsette, 16, of Gulfport. He waived a jury for the penalty phase and told the court he wants the death penalty rather than decades in prison. A penalty-phase setting is November 4. Co-defendant Michelle Brandes is charged with first-degree murder and has a pretrial date of October 22. Gress’s plea is entered. Brandes is presumed innocent.

Investigators say Corsette was met on Grindr, held, and killed. Court files describe dismemberment; remains have not been recovered in public reporting reviewed for this freeze. Judge Philip Federico is handling the case. St. Petersburg Police; Pinellas County courts.

Coworker Arrested in Great Falls Killing

Fairfax County police on Wednesday charged Alexis Antonio Cedillos-Campos, 19, of Maryland, with second-degree murder in the August 17 killing of Carmen Lizet Puch, 42, of Reston, a mother of a 3-year-old. He was arrested in Lanham, Maryland, with help from Prince George’s County police and the U.S. Marshals Service, and is held pending extradition to Virginia. He is presumed innocent.

Police say the pair worked together at a restaurant and were in an intimate relationship. They met early Monday at Difficult Run Park in the 8800 block of Georgetown Pike. Detectives say Cedillos-Campos stabbed Puch multiple times and poured gasoline on her in an unsuccessful attempt to set her on fire. Chief Kevin Davis said he was offering a “full confession.” Assistant Chief Rachel Levy said restaurant video showed him leaving with a knife, gloves, and a bottle later filled with gasoline. Sisters Rescued From Hot Atlanta Trailer

Atlanta police on Monday rescued Zola Cooper, 4, and Norah Cooper, 11 months, from a locked tow trailer at a southwest Atlanta apartment complex after their babysitter failed to return them. Lakesha Shanta Brown, 42, is charged with two counts each of kidnapping and first-degree cruelty to children and is held without bond at the Fulton County Jail. She waived a first appearance Tuesday. She is presumed innocent.

Court records obtained by PEOPLE, as reported by TheGrio, say the girls’ mother, Elica Redding (some local accounts spell it Elicia), met Brown in a Facebook group for expectant mothers, left the children with her on August 15, and reported them missing after Brown’s promised return “was not factual.” Officers tracked a cellphone to the Sylvan Road area, heard crying, and forced the trailer open. Police described it as unclean, unsuitable, and without air conditioning on a day that reached about 97 degrees. The girls were evaluated at Grady Memorial and described as in good health. Bodycam of the rescue was released Tuesday. Brown had an outstanding Alabama failure-to-appear warrant from a 2021 Fairfield infant-kidnapping case; that child was found safe. Psychologist: Clancy Lacked Criminal Responsibility

On the 16th day of Lindsay Clancy’s murder trial in Plymouth, defense psychologist Paul Zeizel told jurors she did not appreciate the “wrongfulness” of killing her three children because of bipolar disorder and postpartum psychosis. “She was unable to conform her behavior to the rule of law,” he testified. Clancy, 36, a former labor-and-delivery nurse, has pleaded not guilty to three counts of first-degree murder in the January 2023 deaths of Cora, 5; Dawson, 3; and Callan, 8 months, in Duxbury. She is presumed innocent.

Zeizel said he spent more than 35 hours with Clancy after the killings. Prosecutors challenged his objectivity, citing work with the defense and errors in his report, and argued she planned the morning by sending her husband out for medicine and dinner. Judge William Sullivan, in a hearing outside the jury’s presence, found former McLean Hospital social worker Emily Thorndike credible but excluded her from testifying because she had left the hospital a year before Clancy’s 2023 admission. Sullivan later excused jurors early over an “unforeseen circumstance,” with testimony to resume Thursday. Plymouth Superior Court.

Remains Found Under Bethania Cubby House

Queensland Police charged Courtenay Williams, 52, of Bethania, and Carlie Rochelle Mordue, 45, of Windaroo, with murder and interfering with a corpse after detectives executing a search warrant on Old Trafford Road, Bethania, found human remains in a box in a shallow grave under a backyard cubby house. Police believe the remains are those of Chad Steven Bishop, who was 46 when he was reported missing from Beenleigh in March 2022. Formal identification and cause of death were still pending autopsy. Both defendants are remanded in custody. They did not enter a plea when the matters were mentioned in Brisbane Magistrates Court on Tuesday. Next mention is September 7. Both are presumed innocent.

Detective Inspector Ian Galpin said a recent tip led Logan District Criminal Investigation Branch to the property on Monday. He said police moved the cubby house to reach that part of the yard, and that the people living there now were not involved in the burial. Court documents allege the pair murdered Bishop in a Beenleigh townhouse on or about March 2, 2022, then moved the body. Queensland Police Service.

A four-year missing-person file now has remains, two defendants, and an ID still waiting on the pathologist. Treat the name as what police believe, not as a completed identification.

Patterson Appeal Hits Hotel Mix-up

Erin Patterson’s lawyers told Victoria’s Court of Appeal on Wednesday that her murder convictions were undermined by a “catastrophic” mix-up in which deliberating jurors stayed at the same hotel as prosecutors, a key police witness, and journalists. Patterson, 51, is serving life for killing three relatives — Don and Gail Patterson, both 70, and Heather Wilkinson, 66 — and attempting to murder Ian Wilkinson by serving a beef Wellington containing death-cap mushrooms at her Victoria home in 2023. She watched the hearing by video from prison. Ian Wilkinson was in court.

Barrister Richard Edney said the hotel arrangement “undermined the integrity of the verdicts and requires the quashing of the convictions.” Director of Public Prosecutions Brendan Kissane called it regrettable and accidental, arguing there was no evidence of communication with the jury. Defense also attacked iNaturalist foraging theory, Facebook messages, and the trial closing. Repeat Killer Convicted at Old Bailey

A jury at the Old Bailey on Tuesday convicted Eugeniu Neamtu, 59, of murdering his flatmate Gheorghe Trica, 63, a Romanian national, after a stabbing at a Westbury Road, Walthamstow, address on February 20, 2026. Jurors deliberated about three hours. Judge Richard Marks KC remanded him for sentencing Friday. As of this freeze he is convicted, not yet sentenced. Do not import the later tariff.

It can now be reported that Neamtu was convicted in Romania in 2007 of a “strikingly similar” housemate stabbing after a drunken money dispute, served 15 years, and was released in 2023. The jury in London was told only that he had a Romanian stabbing conviction; the fact the first victim died was withheld until after the verdict. Neamtu denied murder, claimed self-defence, and did not give evidence. Metropolitan Police; Old Bailey.

A second chest-stabbing of a housemate, three years after release. The conviction is new; the sentence is not yet public.

Teen’s Body Recovered From Landfill

Baton Rouge Police Chief T.J. Morse said Tuesday that crews recovered the body of 15-year-old Ja’Derrius Minnieweather after a six-week search of more than 3,500 tons of landfill waste. Law&Crime published the recovery at 2:46 p.m. Wednesday. Morse said DNA still had to confirm identity; police were confident based on clothing. As of this evening freeze, treat identification as police-believed, not coroner-confirmed. Later Wednesday DNA statements are kept off this card.

Maurice Parms, 51, is charged with first-degree murder and is held without bond in East Baton Rouge Parish Prison. Next court date is October 15. He is presumed innocent. An affidavit cited by The Advocate says witnesses described a beating, blood in the ground, and video of a trash can dragged to the road. Garbage collectors unwittingly hauled the can to the landfill. Parms also faces sex-crime counts involving a 16-year-old girl; those are charged, not tried. Baton Rouge Police Department.

Lakewood Husband Charged in Wife’s Death

The First Judicial District Attorney’s Office on August 19 charged Patrick “Ted” Barnett, 40, with first-degree murder after deliberation, tampering with a deceased human body, and tampering with physical evidence in the August 13 death of his wife, Lindsey Barnett, 37, of Lakewood. He has been held without bond in the Jefferson County Jail since that day. A status hearing is set for Friday at 9:30 a.m. in courtroom 410. He is presumed innocent.

West Metro Fire Rescue and Lakewood Police pronounced Lindsey deceased at the residence. The DA’s charging release does not recite a manner-of-death narrative; later affidavit details published August 20 are outside this freeze. First Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
