Daily Breaking True Crime Briefing
As of: October 1, 2026 (afternoon ET)
Scope: Thursday’s board covers cases from Wednesday morning, Sept. 30, through Thursday afternoon, Oct. 1, ET, along with a Monday bail order in Dhaka that was first reported Thursday. The stories come from police, court and prosecutor statements, wire services and local newsrooms in the United States, Saudi Arabia, India, Germany, South Korea, Bulgaria, France, Britain, New Zealand, Brazil, Kenya, Bangladesh, Malaysia, South Africa, Australia, Spain, the Netherlands, Mexico and Colombia.
The U.S. Supreme Court lifted the stay on Christa Pike’s execution Wednesday, and Tennessee then failed to kill her: after two doses of pentobarbital she was still breathing, and she was taken to an outside medical facility. Gov. Bill Lee has ordered a third-party review and says the state’s remaining scheduled execution will not be carried out this year. Officials now say the flydubai pilot who was stabbed in the cockpit was the captain, and that his fellow pilot is the man in Saudi custody, as the UAE opens its own inquiry. In Frankfurt, a retired anesthetist was convicted of murder at his second trial over a 4-year-old girl’s death in a dental chair. South Korean prosecutors say a Paju café owner locked a woman in a freezer as part of a forged-voucher scheme. A Paris court convicted 13 men over the 2021 Channel sinking that killed 31 people. In California, a couple in their 70s now face a lying-in-wait special circumstance in their son-in-law’s killing. In Arlington, Texas, police named a father charged with capital murder after a 5-year-old boy was stabbed to death. The board also runs from Meerut and Plovdiv to Crépol, Christchurch and Juatuba.
Nashville: Pike Execution Fails After Justices Lift Stay
The Supreme Court let Tennessee go ahead, and the state could not finish the job. On Wednesday the Court granted Tennessee’s application in Kenneth Nelsen, Warden v. Christa Gail Pike, No. 26A428, which Justice Brett Kavanaugh had referred to the full Court, and vacated the Sixth Circuit’s 2–1 stay. Justice Sonia Sotomayor dissented, joined by Justices Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson. The majority gave no reasons. The case continues from The Crime Ledger: September 30, 2026.
Tennessee began the lethal injection at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution that evening, at about 8 p.m. Central according to Pike’s lawyers. Their court filings say she was given two doses of pentobarbital. AP reports that witnesses said the second dose had been given by 8:26 p.m., and that Pike was still alive and loudly snoring when media witnesses were told to leave at 8:53 p.m. She was then taken by ambulance to an off-site medical facility. On Thursday afternoon her lawyers said she was in critical condition and receiving lifesaving medical care, and that they did not know her prognosis.
“The Tennessee Department of Correction followed every step of the State’s lawful, established execution protocol approved by the Attorney General’s Office,” spokesperson Dorinda Carter said, adding that Pike “has been transported to an off-site medical facility.” Her lawyers, Randy Spivey and Kelly Gleason of the Office of the Post-Conviction Defender, said in a statement quoted by ABC News: “Tonight the State of Tennessee once again failed to carry out a lawful execution.” Late Wednesday they filed an emergency motion in the Tennessee Supreme Court, saying she was in “unnecessary agony,” along with motions in the Sixth Circuit and a federal district court. USA Today reports that the court treated the motion as moot after the state said she had not been pronounced dead.
Gov. Bill Lee said Thursday: “Carrying out a lawfully imposed sentence is among the State’s most serious responsibilities, and the people of Tennessee expect it to be done in a manner that is not only legal and constitutional, but is effective. I have ordered a comprehensive, third-party review to determine exactly what occurred. Therefore, the remaining scheduled execution will not be carried out this year.” That execution is Gary Wayne Sutton’s, set for Dec. 3. Pike’s execution warrant expired at midnight, ABC News and NBC News report, and no new date has been set. Robin Maher of the Death Penalty Information Center told AP the episode was “singular and unparalleled.”
Pike, 50, was convicted of first-degree murder in 1996 for the January 1995 killing of Colleen Slemmer, 19, a fellow student at the Job Corps center in Knoxville. She remains under a sentence of death and retains appeal rights.

Tabuk: Stabbed flydubai Captain Named as Inquiries Widen
The pilot who was attacked was the captain. Indian officials and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu identify him as Smit Machchhar, an Indian national from Mumbai, who was stabbed in the flight deck of flydubai flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv on Wednesday. The Guardian reports that he managed to open the cockpit door from the floor, letting passengers and crew in to overpower his attacker, his fellow pilot. The Boeing 737 landed safely in Tabuk, in northwestern Saudi Arabia. The case continues from The Crime Ledger: September 30, 2026.
Indian officials say Machchhar has had surgery in Tabuk and is in stable condition. Prime Minister Narendra Modi called him a hero. “Despite being stabbed and seriously injured, he fought back, resisted, opened the cockpit door and enabled passengers and crew to overpower the attacker,” Netanyahu said. A passenger who described himself as a plumber told Netanyahu he grabbed the controls before crew members took over.
The investigation is now spread across several countries. The UAE announced its own inquiry on Thursday, and the Guardian reports that Saudi investigators, who are holding the co-pilot, are working with the UAE, the United States, Oman and Israel. A regional official told AP that the detained co-pilot is an Omani citizen and that “nothing is ruled out.” AP reports that Netanyahu, without giving details, claimed the attacker underwent Islamist indoctrination; when AP asked how he knew, his office declined to comment. Asked about any link to Iran, Netanyahu said it was “too early to say.” flydubai has suspended flights to and from Israel. No authority has named the detained pilot or announced a charge, so he is presumed innocent.

Frankfurt: Anesthetist Convicted of Murder in Girl’s Dental-Chair Death
This time the charge was murder. On Thursday the Frankfurt Regional Court convicted a 69-year-old former anesthetist of one count of murder and three of attempted murder and sentenced him to 13 years and six months in prison. On Sept. 21, 2021, at a dental practice in Kronberg im Taunus, he injected four children with contaminated anesthetic while ignoring basic hygiene rules, the Allgemeine Zeitung reports. All four developed sepsis. Three survived. A 4-year-old girl died that night in the dental chair.
His first trial, before a different chamber in November 2024, ended with a manslaughter verdict and 10½ years. Prosecutors appealed, and in January 2026 Germany’s Federal Court of Justice overturned that judgment and sent the case back to Frankfurt. This time the chamber found the murder element of intent to cover up. The Frankfurter Rundschau reports that the court was convinced he treated the girl himself late into the night instead of calling an ambulance, and told the other children’s parents not to take them to hospital, to hide his poor hygiene. The court counted his age and his admissions on most counts in his favour.
The verdict is not final. The Frankfurter Rundschau reports that his lawyer is considering an appeal. He retains appeal rights. German media identify him only by a first name and initial, in line with German privacy practice, and the Ledger does not name the child.

Paju: Café Owner Indicted Over Woman Locked in Freezer
Prosecutors say the voucher deal was bait. On Thursday the Goyang branch of the Uijeongbu District Prosecutors’ Office indicted a café owner in his 30s, already in detention, over the death of a woman who was locked inside a freezer container at his café in Paju, north of Seoul. The charges, reported by KBS and the Kyeonggi Ilbo, are killing a person he had lured and forging and using securities.
According to the indictment as described by both outlets, the owner had large debts. He arranged a sale of department-store gift vouchers, had 100,000 forged ₩500,000 vouchers printed, and asked the buyer’s side to send an older person to inspect them. The woman who came was shut inside the freezer. The Kyeonggi Ilbo reports that she was held about 27 hours at around −25 °C and was found dead the next afternoon. Prosecutors say the plan was to blame the buyer for the collapsed deal and demand billions of won.
KBS reports that he told investigators he had no intent to kill and had not acted alone. Prosecutors say call recordings and forensic analysis show otherwise. He has not entered a plea and is presumed innocent.

Paris: Six Smugglers Convicted Over Deadliest Channel Sinking
A Paris court ruled Wednesday on the deadliest migrant accident in the English Channel. It found six men from Iraq and Afghanistan guilty of manslaughter over the November 2021 sinking of an overloaded dinghy off Calais, in which 31 people died, and sentenced them to between six and 10 years in prison. Le Monde, reporting with AP and AFP, says one of the other eight defendants was acquitted. The remaining seven received sentences ranging from a six-month suspended term to four years, mostly on smuggling charges.
The boat left the French coast at about 10 p.m. on Nov. 24, 2021, Africanews reports with AP, and began deflating, with its engine failing, about four hours later. Most of the dead were Iraqi Kurds. The court said the disaster was the work of people driven by profit and indifferent to human life. Emmanuel Daoud, a lawyer for one victim’s family, said the ruling tells the families that their dead are neither anonymous nor forgotten. The National reports that the heaviest sentence, 10 years, went to an Afghan man who is on the run and is now the subject of an arrest warrant. A separate investigation into seven military personnel accused of failing to help the people in the water is still under way. All 13 who were convicted retain appeal rights.

Dublin, Calif.: In-Laws Charged With Lying-in-Wait Murder
The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office has filed murder charges against Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, both 77, in the killing of their son-in-law, Jonathan McKinsey, 40, a New York Times Games engineering director. He was shot Saturday in the parking lot of the Dublin Sports Grounds. The case continues from The Crime Ledger: September 28, 2026.
The complaint adds firearm allegations and a lying-in-wait special circumstance. The Press Democrat reports that this special circumstance “can carry a sentence of life without the possibility of parole if they are convicted.” AP reports that prosecutors say Zhang admitted the shooting in a later interview and that a second gun was found in the couple’s car. Those are allegations, and neither defendant has pleaded.
Both appeared briefly in court Wednesday, and the arraignment was put over to Thursday. AP reports that public defender Jennie Otis represents Zhang. Chen told Alameda County Superior Court Judge Diane Meier through an interpreter that she could not afford a lawyer, and the judge said a public defender would be appointed Thursday. The Press Democrat reports that both are held without bail at Santa Rita Jail. AP says the shooting came a week before a scheduled hearing in McKinsey’s divorce. Both are presumed innocent.

Meerut: Wife and Partner Convicted in “Blue Drum” Murder
After 126 hearings, a Meerut court has delivered a verdict. On Wednesday District Judge Arvind Mishra found Muskan Rastogi and Sahil Shukla guilty of murdering Saurabh Rajput, a former merchant navy officer and Rastogi’s husband, in March 2025. The court found that his body was dismembered and hidden in a blue drum with concrete and sand. That drum gave the case its name across India.
Government counsel Krishna Kumar Chaubey told reporters that the prosecution examined 22 witnesses, including people linked to the purchase of the drum. He said the court referred to a Supreme Court order calling for “appropriate punishment” in heinous crimes. The Hindu reports that the sentence will be announced after 15 days. The prosecution is seeking the maximum penalty, and Chaubey said the court has the power to impose death. Both joined the hearing by video from jail.
Both are convicted, will be heard on sentence, and retain appeal rights.

Arlington, Texas: Father Charged After Boy, 5, Stabbed to Death
Arlington police say Heyco Cruz Linares, 27, stabbed his two young sons at their apartment late Wednesday, killing a 5-year-old boy. At a Thursday news conference, Chief Al Jones said a man approached an officer’s parked car in the 1400 block of North Cooper Street at about 11:50 p.m., hit the window with a knife, then fled. Officers chased him onto Interstate 30 into Grand Prairie and arrested him. During the arrest, police say, he told officers he had killed his children.
Officers found the boys with stab wounds at a complex in the 1600 block of South Cooper Street. Both were taken to hospital. The 5-year-old died of his injuries. The 2-year-old remains hospitalized. Police have not released either child’s name, and the Ledger is not naming them. Motive remains under investigation.
Police say Linares has been charged with capital murder of a person under 10, evading arrest and terroristic threat against a peace officer. Bond has not been set. He has not entered a plea and is presumed innocent.

Plovdiv: Former Employee Charged in Club Owner’s Killing
Iliyan Filipov, owner of the football club Botev Plovdiv and founder of the PIMK private college, was shot dead at about 1 a.m. Wednesday outside a building in Plovdiv’s Hristo Smirnenski district. BGNES reports that he had built the property himself.
Police detained Slavcho Megerov, 51, in Sofia the same day. Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev named him in Parliament on Thursday as the person police say carried out the killing, and said he was a former employee with a lengthy criminal record. Plovdiv prosecutors announced Thursday that Megerov has been charged with premeditated murder. Supervising prosecutor Dimitar Molev said the motive was personal, from unsettled financial relations between the two men, who had known each other for a long time. A custody hearing is expected over the weekend. Megerov has not entered a plea and is presumed innocent.
Fans gathered outside the club’s stadium at 19:12 on Wednesday, a nod to the year Botev was founded. They laid wreaths and lit candles.

Crépol: Prosecutor Appeals Racism Finding in Village-Dance Killing
The Valence prosecutor’s office has appealed the order sending the Crépol case to trial. On Sept. 25 the investigating judges sent 11 people to the juvenile assize court on charges of murder and attempted murder, adding an aggravating circumstance of racism “against the white race and the French nation.” A 12th person is to be tried for violence. The victim was killed during a village dance on the night of Nov. 18–19, 2023.
Prosecutor Laurent de Caigny opposed the racism circumstance in his Aug. 17 submissions. ICI and Le Dauphiné report that he filed the appeal Wednesday and that it covers the whole order, for coherence, since only some of the defendants had appealed. The investigating chamber of the Grenoble appeals court will look at the case again, and ICI reports that a decision is expected within four months. ICI says the trial is still expected in autumn 2027.
Because the case goes to a juvenile court, the Ledger names no one involved. Every accused is presumed innocent.

British Transport Police say Jewitt was seriously assaulted on the eastbound Central line platform at Liverpool Street Underground station at 10.51 p.m. on Aug. 30. He died in hospital on Sept. 1.
Before Jewitt died, the Crown Prosecution Service had authorised a charge of grievous bodily harm. On Thursday, BTP said, Maximo appeared at Inner London Crown Court by video link, “where the charges on the indictment were amended.” He was remanded in custody, and the next hearing at the same court is on Oct. 21. Juatuba: 65 Years for Student’s Rape and Femicide
A jury in Juatuba, in greater Belo Horizonte, convicted Ítalo Jefersson da Silva late Wednesday after a session of nearly 10 hours. He was found guilty of femicide, rape and concealing the body of Vanessa Lara de Oliveira, a 23-year-old psychology student killed in February. Judge Alina Tereza de Mattos Azevedo sentenced him to 65 years and eight months, to be served initially in a closed regime. She refused him the right to appeal in liberty.
At the request of the Minas Gerais prosecutors’ office, the judge also ordered R$100,000 in moral damages for the student’s family. Nairobi: Mutiso Murder Suspect Considered for Witness Protection
One suspect in the killing of Dr Victoria Mutiso may become a prosecution witness. A Nairobi court has allowed police to hold Samuel Karanja Gathoni, alias Wakili, for 14 more days while authorities consider him for the Witness Protection Programme. The case continues from The Crime Ledger: September 30, 2026.
Court documents quoted by Citizen Digital say he “gave crucial information to the investigating team hence the ODPP and investigating team intends to use them as prosecution witness.” In an affidavit, Corporal Romana Odour of the DCI Homicide Investigations Bureau said the Witness Protection Agency interviewed him on Sept. 24. Prosecutors asked for him to be held at Kilimani Police Station or another police station. They cited a high risk to him because some suspects linked to the murder remain at large, along with pending forensic tests and concerns about witness interference.
Dr Mutiso was shot dead on July 29. Others have been charged with murder in the case; Gathoni has not. All of them are presumed innocent.

Dhaka: High Court Bails Prime Accused in Mitford Killing
The Daily Star reports that the High Court has granted six months’ ad-interim bail to Mahmudul Hasan Mohin, the prime accused in the killing of scrap trader Lal Chand, known as Sohag. The order, from a bench of Justice Md Ruhul Quddus and Justice Syed Hasan Zobair, was issued on Monday and reported Thursday. The bench also issued a rule asking the state to explain why he should not get permanent bail.
Deputy Attorney General Syeda Shajia Sharmin told the paper that bail was granted on the ground that there was no specific allegation against him. Attorney General Md Ruhul Quddus Kazal said the state would file a leave-to-appeal petition seeking a stay. According to the case documents, Sohag, 39, was hacked and repeatedly struck with stones near Mitford Hospital in Old Dhaka on July 9, 2025. Mohin is presumed innocent.

Kuala Pilah: Remand Extended in Hostel Student’s Death
A Form Four student being investigated over the death of a 14-year-old schoolmate in Kuala Pilah, Negeri Sembilan, will stay in custody until Oct. 8. State police chief Datuk Alzafny Ahmad said the magistrate’s court granted a seven-day extension Thursday morning, after the first remand order expired.
The boy was found unconscious in a sports-school dormitory in late September and was pronounced dead in hospital. Police believe he was assaulted after a hostel warden caught him vaping. A second Form Four student has also been detained. Alzafny said police have recorded statements from 70 people. Five students have come forward to say the first suspect bullied them earlier. Because both the victim and the suspects are minors, the Ledger names no one. Neither suspect has been charged, and both are presumed innocent.

Sydney: Housemate Saw ‘Red Liquid’ Before Paddington Crime Scene
The trial of former senior constable Beau Lamarre-Condon, 31, is in its second week in the NSW Supreme Court. He has pleaded not guilty to murdering Jesse Baird, 26, and Luke Davies, 29, who were shot at Baird’s Paddington home on Feb. 19, 2024.
On Thursday a housemate, given the pseudonym “Belinda Smith” in the proceedings, testified that she photographed what looked like “rusted water” in the backyard at 5.41 p.m. that day. “I saw two surfboard bags with a blue tarp over the top of them and red liquid,” she said. By the next day, she said, the surfboards had been cleared and the liquid was gone. Photographs tendered in court show items allegedly dumped in a skip bin. AAP reports that a crime scene officer agreed in evidence that Davies could not be excluded as the major DNA contributor to a swab taken from the trigger of the gun. The defence has outlined a claim of self-defence.
The trial continues. He is presumed innocent.

Benidorm: Partner Jailed Without Bail Over Woman’s Death
A judge in Benidorm’s violence-against-women court on Wednesday ordered a man held in provisional prison, without bail, over the death of his partner. According to the Valencian region’s High Court of Justice (TSJCV), the case is open for homicide or murder “sin perjuicio de ulterior calificación,” meaning the charge may still be reclassified. Two other men were released on provisional liberty and remain under investigation for concealment.
Policía Nacional arrested the three, aged 30, 40 and 45, in Benidorm on Monday. Marina Baixa Digital reports that the inquiry began when two men went to the police station and said an acquaintance had told them he had killed his partner during an argument. They said they were then threatened into helping move her body to open land between Benidorm and Finestrat. Their information led officers to the body, and the main suspect was arrested at home. Early inquiries place the death in a flat on Calle Juan Fuster Zaragoza. All three are presumed innocent.

Rochester, N.Y.: Man, 26, Pleads Not Guilty in Teen’s Parking-Lot Death
Rochester police have charged Daequan Brown, 26, with murder and criminal possession of a weapon over an Aug. 1 shooting that killed a 14-year-old girl on North Clinton Avenue. Police say several hundred people had gathered in a parking lot at about 12:30 a.m. They allege Brown ran through the lot firing a .380-caliber handgun at people as they fled. They say the girl was not the intended target. The Ledger is not naming her.
Police say Brown went to Rochester General Hospital shortly after the shooting with a gunshot wound to his ankle. Officers arrested him after a foot chase near Central Park at about 6 p.m. Wednesday. Police say two earlier felony convictions bar him from having a handgun in New York. On Thursday morning he pleaded not guilty and was held without bail at the Monroe County Jail. A preliminary hearing is set for Tuesday. He is presumed innocent.

Los Angeles: Woman Indicted in Shooting at Rihanna’s Home
The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office on Wednesday unsealed a grand jury indictment against Ivanna Lisette Ortiz, 36, of Orlando, Florida. Prosecutors say she drove up to Rihanna’s home in the 9500 block of Heather Road in Beverly Crest at about 1:20 p.m. on March 8 and fired an assault weapon at the house several times. No one was struck.
The indictment was returned on June 18 and kept sealed until a judge ruled that she was competent to stand trial. Ortiz pleaded not guilty. Bail was set at $2.65 million, and she returns Oct. 29 for a pretrial hearing at the Foltz Criminal Justice Center. “It is pure luck and not a matter of restraint that no one was killed or injured,” District Attorney Nathan J.
