The Crime Ledger: October 3, 2026

Daily Breaking True Crime Briefing
As of: October 3, 2026 (5:30 p.m. ET recheck)
Scope: Saturday’s board covers cases reported from Friday morning, Oct. 2, through late morning Saturday, Oct. 3, ET, along with a Thursday verdict in Brazil, a Thursday appeals ruling in Nevada and a Puebla court order first reported late Thursday. The stories come from police, court and prosecutor statements, wire services and local newsrooms in the United Arab Emirates, England, the United States, Hong Kong, Kenya, Canada, France, Chile, Japan, Germany, Nigeria, Turkey, Mexico, Australia, Pakistan, Brazil, the Netherlands and India.

The UAE’s attorney general now says the co-pilot who attacked his captain on flydubai flight FZ1073 was attempting a terrorist act, and reports say Oman had barred him from flying over extremist views. In England, terrorism charges landed twice in a day. Joshua Kerry, already accused of murdering Ann Widdecombe, is now also charged with preparing terrorist acts in a case that reports tie to Nigel Farage, and two Iranian men were remanded on Saturday over an alleged bomb plot against Manchester’s Jewish community. Christa Pike is unconscious on a ventilator while her lawyers ask a court to preserve all the evidence from her failed execution. Three older killings moved because of arrests: a 1998 stabbing in Georgia, a 2023 cemetery killing in Kayseri and a 2025 Montreal case whose suspect was found in Mexico. The rest of the board runs from Hong Kong and Mwea to Tourves, Santiago and Sydney.

Tabuk: UAE Says flydubai Co-Pilot Attempted a Terrorist Act

The UAE has now put a name to what happened in the cockpit of flight FZ1073. On Saturday, Attorney General Hamad Saif Al Shamsi said investigators had found that the co-pilot “attempted to carry out a terrorist act,” attacking the captain on the flight deck with a crash axe and trying to take over the aircraft’s controls, The National and NBC News report. A crash axe is normally kept in the cockpit for emergencies. This case continues from The Crime Ledger: October 1, 2026.

Al Shamsi said the inquiry is still working to establish “the full circumstances, motives, and any links related to the incident.” UAE authorities haven’t released the co-pilot’s name. AP also reports that a regional official and a person familiar with the matter said Oman had barred him from flying over concerns that he’d adopted extremist views, and had moved him to an administrative job at Oman Air. He was transferred from Saudi Arabia to Abu Dhabi on Thursday, the Saudi Interior Ministry said, according to NBC News.

Capt. Smit Machchhar is recovering in an Abu Dhabi hospital. “In that moment I was fighting for my life,” he told Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on a call from his hospital bed Friday, The National reports. A flydubai spokesperson said the airline couldn’t comment beyond its published statements. No formal charge has been reported, and the co-pilot is presumed innocent.

Devon: Widdecombe Murder Accused Charged Over Alleged Farage Terror Plot

Joshua Kerry, 28, was already accused of murdering Ann Widdecombe. Now he faces a terrorism charge as well. Counter Terrorism Policing said Friday that he’s been charged with one count of preparation of terrorist acts relating to alleged activity between May 31, 2024, and July 8, 2026, and ITV News and Politico report that the charge concerns Reform UK leader Nigel Farage. Widdecombe, 78, a former Conservative minister who had become a Reform UK spokeswoman, died after an attack at her home in Haytor on Dartmoor.

“Having carefully reviewed the evidence, we have made the decision to prosecute Joshua Kerry for engaging in conduct in preparation of terrorist acts,” said Frank Ferguson of the Crown Prosecution Service’s Special Crime and Counter Terrorism Division. Deputy Assistant Commissioner Vicki Evans called it “a hugely intensive and complex investigation.” Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said the case “raises serious questions about the security of those in public life.”

ITV News reports that in August counter-terrorism police reopened a year-long probe into an alleged firebomb attack at Farage’s south London home, which police had investigated as an attempted burglary. Police haven’t said whether that inquiry is connected to Friday’s charge. The Crown Prosecution Service says Kerry is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, Oct. 7, on the terrorism count. He’s presumed innocent of both charges.

Manchester: Two Iranian Men Remanded Over Alleged Synagogue Bomb Plot

Two Iranian nationals stood in the dock at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Saturday morning, a day after counter-terrorism police charged them with engaging in conduct in preparation for terrorist acts. Salam Ahmadyan, 36, of Liverpool, and Rahman Salehi, 34, of Salford, were arrested in Manchester on Sept. 20. They spoke to confirm their names, dates of birth and addresses. District Judge Nina Tempia remanded both men in custody until an Old Bailey hearing on Oct. 23, the Belfast Telegraph reports.

Prosecutor Mark Luckett told the court they’re accused of preparing acts of terrorism against Manchester’s Jewish community “through the use of a homemade explosive device,” and of what the prosecution calls hostile reconnaissance at Heaton Park Synagogue and the Jewish Museum in Cheetham Hill. Prosecutors allege a third party, assessed to be an Iranian national most likely operating from inside Iran, directed the plan and sent instructions for building the device. The Washington Post and the Belfast Telegraph both report that the alleged device was a chlorine bomb.

Two people died in an attack at the same synagogue on Oct. 2, 2025. Deputy Assistant Commissioner Vicki Evans said police don’t believe there’s any ongoing threat to the public. No pleas were reported. Both men are presumed innocent.

Nashville: Pike on Ventilator as Lawyers Move to Preserve Evidence

Christa Pike survived Tennessee’s attempt to execute her, but she’s still unconscious. Her lawyers said in a statement Friday that she remains in critical condition, unconscious, intubated and on a ventilator, and that she’s being treated for “significant injuries to both arms,” NBC News reports. This case continues from The Crime Ledger: October 1, 2026.

The same day, her lawyers filed an emergency motion asking a state court to order the Tennessee Department of Correction to preserve all evidence from the failed execution. “Preserving this evidence is essential to understanding what happened, ensuring accountability and protecting Christa’s legal rights,” two of her attorneys said, AP reports. The filing says that “apparently at no point did any member of the execution team realize that the IV lines were not correctly placed or that the veins had blown.” Her lawyers believe the pentobarbital flowed into her body instead of her bloodstream. A corrections spokesperson told NBC News the agency doesn’t comment on pending litigation. An expedited hearing on the preservation request has been granted, FOX 17 Nashville reports, but a date and time haven’t been set, and no ruling on the motion itself has been reported.

Gov. Bill Lee has ordered a third-party review and called off the other execution Tennessee had set for this year, and no new date for Pike has been reported. She was convicted of the 1995 murder of Colleen Slemmer, 19. She remains under a sentence of death and retains appeal rights.

Hong Kong: Abby Choi Jury Told Killing Was Premeditated

Prosecutors say Abby Choi’s killing was planned. The High Court heard Friday that the 2023 murder of the model and socialite was premeditated, RTHK reports. Her ex-husband Kwong Kong-chi, his brother Kwong Kong-kit and their father Kwong Kau are charged with murdering Choi on Feb. 21, 2023, at Lung Mei Village in Tai Po, and with preventing the lawful burial of her body.

Continuing its opening statement, the prosecution showed CCTV screenshots and receipts that it says track Kwong Kau and Kwong Kong-kit buying items at several locations. It also suggested that Choi was already unconscious, or dead, inside the car that took her to Lung Mei Village. The Independent Singapore reports that on Thursday the court heard a family feud over a HK$60 million flat was the motive, and that all three men have pleaded not guilty to murder, while the two brothers have pleaded guilty to preventing lawful burial.

The jury trial continues. All three defendants are presumed innocent of murder.

Mwea: Detectives Investigate Pregnant Woman’s Death After Police Lift

A lift to the farm ended with a pregnant woman dead on a rural road in Kirinyaga County. Kenya’s National Police Service says detectives are investigating her death in Mwea East on Friday after residents and her husband alleged she was thrown from a moving police vehicle. The husband, Anthony Muturi, survived with injuries. He told reporters the couple had accepted a lift from officers, who then refused to let them out and demanded money, the Daily Nation and The Eastleigh Voice report.

The NPS said her body had visible injuries to the head and hip. The Inspector General has been briefed on “this heinous crime” and has told the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to speed up the inquiry, the service said, and county and regional detectives have joined local investigators. Angry residents shut the Piai-South Ngariama road after the death. Mwea East police commander Henry Gitonga told the Daily Nation that investigations had been launched.

No arrest has been reported, and no officer has been publicly identified.

Waxahachie, Texas: Mother Charged With Capital Murder in Sons’ Deaths

Colleen Nichole Lemmon, 42, has been charged with two counts of capital murder in the shooting deaths of her two sons, the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office says. Christopher Scott Pitre, 21, was pronounced dead at the family’s home on Big Sky Drive in Waxahachie on Thursday. His 15-year-old brother was taken to hospital and later died.

Deputies found Lemmon at the home with non-life-threatening injuries, and she was treated in hospital before being booked. Detectives found probable cause that she shot both of them, the sheriff’s office said. An arrest affidavit says she told deputies, “I shot both my kids,” FOX 4 reports. “My deepest sympathies go out to the victims’ father, family members, and loved ones involved in this tragic incident,” Sheriff Brad Norman said.

Lemmon is being held in the Ellis County Jail, and a bond decision is pending her arraignment, LawAndCrime reports. She’s presumed innocent.

Mississippi Mills: Two Charged With Murder in Burning-Car Death

Two people from Arnprior, Ont., are charged with second-degree murder in the death of a man whose body was found in a burning vehicle in Mississippi Mills last month. Lanark County OPP say Lindsay Dolan, 37, and Dylan Zoobkoff, 33, also face counts of indignity to a dead body under the Criminal Code. The victim was Colin Campbell, 37, of Mississippi Mills.

Officers and the Mississippi Mills Fire Department were called to a vehicle fire off Ramsay Concession 12 shortly before 5:15 p.m. on Sept. 11, and Campbell’s body was found inside. After a nearly three-week investigation, the pair were arrested in Regina on Wednesday, Sept. 30, with help from the Saskatchewan RCMP and police in Winnipeg and Regina, Inside Ottawa Valley reports.

Both remain in custody and were scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Perth on Friday. The outcome of that appearance hasn’t been reported. The charges haven’t been proven in court, and both are presumed innocent.

Tourves: Life Sentence for Man Who Killed His Parents-in-Law

The jurors went further than the prosecution asked. On Friday the Var assize court in Draguignan found Anthony Barotin guilty of the premeditated murders of his parents-in-law, Patrick and Marie-Laure Lauro, at Tourves in July 2021. He was sentenced to life in prison with a 22-year minimum term, and he’ll be banned from the Var for 10 years after any release. The advocate general had sought a 20-year minimum.

Nice-Matin reports that jurors deliberated for four and a half hours and set aside the aggravating circumstance of ambush. Barotin confessed in custody, 20 Minutes reports, then withdrew that account in November 2023 and said two masked men and a former business associate of his father-in-law were behind it. Nice-Matin says that version didn’t persuade the jurors.

Barotin retains appeal rights.

Santiago: Ex-Warden Jailed Pending Trial Over 2018 Inmate Death

A former prison warden is now in custody over a death that went unpunished for eight years. Juan Farías Pumero, a former warden of a detention centre in Punta Arenas, was formally charged at a hearing on Friday and ordered held in preventive detention over the January 2018 death of inmate Rodolfo Muñoz Morales inside the Santiago 1 prison. The court found enough evidence to attribute to him participation as a perpetrator in the homicide, Canal 9 and Epicentro Chile report.

Prosecutors allege that fellow prison officer Álex Vega Torres caused Muñoz to strike his head against a pillar, and that Farías was present and didn’t step in, despite his duty to protect the inmate. Muñoz died two days later of a fatal head injury. The case had been closed without charges, but a Santiago court agreed in April to reopen it after new evidence surfaced in Operación Apocalipsis, an investigation into an alleged corruption network inside prisons. No report says Farías faces charges in the corruption inquiry itself.

Farías is presumed innocent.

Ota, Japan: Clothing Found in Gunma Woman’s Killing

Investigators in Gunma Prefecture have found clothes, including a jacket, that the man arrested in last month’s killing of a 52-year-old woman in Ota is believed to have worn during the attack, TV Asahi’s ANN network reported Friday, citing people involved in the investigation. Police are looking at whether he changed his clothes to hide his involvement.

The man, 30, is the ex-husband of the woman’s eldest daughter. He was arrested at a pachinko parlour in Takasaki after police had put him on a public wanted list, TBS reports. The arrest was on suspicion of the attempted murder of the woman’s son, 26, the Sanyo Shimbun reports. The paper also says the daughter told Tochigi police on Sept. 19 that he’d threatened to kill her mother and brother and then himself.

So far the arrest covers only the attack on her son, and he’s presumed innocent.

Montreal: Third Suspect in 2025 Killing Arrested in Mexico

Gabriel Lavoie, 22, was arrested Thursday in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, on a Montreal murder warrant, the SPVM says. He’s being held while extradition proceedings get under way. He’s the third person arrested in the March 2025 death of Frédérick Chartier-Lévesque, 34, who was fatally wounded with a sharp object in the Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve borough, Radio-Canada reports.

Two other men were arrested in Montreal within days of the killing. “No matter where a suspect hides after committing a crime, we will make every effort to find them and ensure they are brought to justice,” said Cmdr. Mélanie Dupont, head of the SPVM’s major crimes section, who thanked Mexican authorities, the RCMP and Interpol.

Lavoie is presumed innocent.

Euskirchen: Husband Held on Murder Warrant After Wife’s Body Found

A week-long search for a missing mother ended in a forest. Bonn police say a body found late Thursday in woods at Zülpich is that of a 46-year-old woman from Euskirchen who had been missing since Sept. 25, and an autopsy on Friday confirmed her identity.

Her husband, 51, was arrested Thursday evening. On Friday prosecutors brought him before a judge on suspicion of murder for base motives, and the judge issued a pretrial detention warrant, police said. He hasn’t said anything about the allegations in police questioning, and the motive is still unclear, dpa reports. Police had earlier searched a recycling yard in Weilerswist because he’d said he’d taken waste from water damage there.

He’s presumed innocent.

Suleja: Police Set Out Case Against Guard in Girl’s Death

Niger State police issued a fresh account on Friday of an 11-year-old girl’s death in Suleja, and Dateline Nigeria reports that the statement was meant to counter misleading claims circulating on social media. Police spokesman SP Wasiu Abiodun said the girl left home on Sept. 19 for a relative’s birthday celebration and didn’t come back. Her body was later found in a well on the grounds of the Apostolic Church in Suleja.

Godwin Dauda, 26, a security guard at the church, was arrested at about 8 p.m. on Sept. 23 in the Kuje area of the Federal Capital Territory, police said. They say he confessed under interrogation to luring the girl into his security room and sexually assaulting her, that she died, and that he put her body in the well. The Punch and Daily Post report the same account.

Police say the investigation continues. No court appearance has been reported, and Dauda is presumed innocent.

Kayseri: Arrest Three Years After Cemetery Killing of Disabled Man

Fehmi Lup, 34, a man with an intellectual disability, went to visit a cousin’s grave in October 2023 and was later found stabbed to death in Asri Cemetery in Kayseri’s Melikgazi district. The case sat unsolved until a special team from the Kayseri chief prosecutor’s office and police reopened it, working under a Justice Ministry unit for unsolved crimes and going back through camera footage and witness statements.

That led to Mehmet Can Dilekçi, 26, who knew Lup and had talked with him at the cemetery that day, Son Dakika reports. He was detained along with three relatives. A court ordered Dilekçi held in pretrial detention, and the others were released. In his statement, reported by both DHA and Son Dakika, Dilekçi said Lup attacked him with a knife when he wouldn’t hand over a cigarette, and that the blade went into Lup’s heart by accident as they struggled.

Dilekçi is presumed innocent.

Esperanza, Puebla: Man Ordered to Stand Trial in Partner’s Femicide

Puebla state prosecutors have won an order sending Emmanuel Juan N., 25, to trial for femicide over the death of his partner. Investigators say he beat her at the home they shared on 12 Poniente street in the Ferrocarril neighbourhood of Esperanza on Sept. 23, and that she died of traumatic fracture-dislocations of the cervical spine.

Relatives had asked state police for help because they hadn’t heard from her for days, and neighbours had reported strange noises, Puebla Online reports. A control judge ordered him held in pretrial detention for the length of the proceedings and gave investigators three months, until Jan. 1, 2027, to finish the supplementary investigation, according to the Puebla prosecutor’s office.

Emmanuel Juan N. is presumed innocent.

Sydney: Lamarre-Condon Jury Hears Triple-Zero Call

On Friday the NSW Supreme Court jury heard a recording of a short triple-zero call made on the morning Luke Davies and Jesse Baird died. Beau Lamarre-Condon, 31, a former police officer, has pleaded not guilty to murdering both men at Baird’s Paddington home in February 2024. This case continues from The Crime Ledger: October 1, 2026.

The Crown and the defence give different accounts of what was happening during that call. Prosecutors allege Davies was shot deliberately while trying to reach emergency services. The defence says both men died in struggles over Lamarre-Condon’s service pistol. Under cross-examination, crime scene officer Sen. Sgt. Bronwyn Lansley agreed that no fired bullet was found inside the bedroom, and said testing indicated a bullet had exited through one side of the bedroom door, The Nightly reports.

The trial continues, and Lamarre-Condon is presumed innocent.

Douglas, Ga.: Arrest in 1998 Killing of Christy Myers

Christy Dawn Myers, 20, left her home in Broxton late on Sept. 14, 1998, to go to a store. Not long after midnight she was found stabbed to death beside her car on a Coffee County highway. Nearly 28 years later, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation says it has arrested James Lawrence III, 47, of Irwin County, and booked him into the Coffee County Jail on murder counts, including malice murder, and a count of aggravated assault.

The GBI says continued forensic testing led investigators to him. “Christy Dawn Myers is not forgotten,” her daughter, Chelsea Wolfe, said at Friday’s news conference, WALB reports. The GBI says the investigation remains active.

Lawrence is presumed innocent.

Haripur: Two Relatives Arrested After Couple Shot Dead

A husband and wife were shot dead at their home in Pipliyala village, in Haripur’s Ghazi tehsil, and police say the attackers then set the husband’s body on fire. Police named him as Bostan. Dawn reports that the attackers burst into the house and that the two families were already in litigation over property.

Police arrested two men, Ashfaq and Qamar, who are said to be relatives of the couple, and recovered the weapon they say was used, Dawn and Ummat report. Ummat reports that a murder case has been registered.

Both men are presumed innocent.

Rio Verde: Man Gets Over 16 Years in Lawyer’s Killing

A jury in Rio Verde, Goiás, on Thursday convicted Ronaldo Silvano Moreira over the October 2024 shooting of lawyer Cássio Bruno Barroso, 48, outside his office, and he was sentenced to a total of more than 16 years in prison. G1 reports that police tied the killing to a court fight over a farm in Mato Grosso worth about R$100 million. Two co-defendants were acquitted.

Jornal do Vale reports that jurors found Moreira played a lesser part in the killing and rejected all three aggravating factors the prosecution put forward, so the homicide count alone carried just under 8 years. The rest of his sentence covers other offences, including tampering with a vehicle’s identification. The judge ordered him to begin serving it immediately, the paper says. His lawyers say they’ll appeal. A man suspected of ordering the killing is in custody awaiting trial, G1 reports.

Moreira retains appeal rights.

Alkmaar: Asylum-Centre Stabbing Suspect Held Two More Weeks

The 22-year-old man arrested after Wednesday’s fatal stabbing at the asylum seekers’ centre on Robonsbosweg in Alkmaar is now suspected of murder or manslaughter, the Public Prosecution Service for North Holland says. An examining magistrate has ordered him held for another 14 days. A 24-year-old man died. This case continues from The Crime Ledger: October 1, 2026.

Police say the suspect and the victim knew each other and were both staying at the centre, NH Nieuws reports. Police and prosecutors aren’t giving further details while the investigation continues, Streekstad Centraal reports.

The suspect hasn’t been named, and he’s presumed innocent.

DeSoto, Ill.: Judge Admits Alleged Jail Murder-for-Hire Plot

Marcus Moultrie, 37, goes on trial Monday in Jackson County, and the judge will hear about more than the attack itself. Moultrie faces two counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder over the May 13 beating of his ex-girlfriend, Deborah Snider, and her 8-year-old son with a softball bat in DeSoto. The boy died four days later. Snider survived.

On Thursday, Presiding Circuit Judge Ralph Bloodworth ruled that prosecutors can introduce evidence that Moultrie tried to hire a fellow inmate to kill Snider for $1,500 because it would “help in his case,” Capitol News Illinois reports. Prosecutors say a cooperating inmate came forward with a written agreement Moultrie signed. Moultrie’s public defender, Celeste Korando, questioned that inmate’s credibility in court. It’ll be a bench trial.

Moultrie is presumed innocent.

Achères: Man in Custody After Partner Killed Overnight

A man is in police custody in the Yvelines, west of Paris, on suspicion of killing his partner overnight Friday into Saturday in Achères, the Versailles prosecutor’s office told AFP. Prosecutors have opened an investigation into the murder of a partner and handed it to the territorial crime division.

According to the first findings, the man called police himself. Officers arrested him at the victim’s home, and he’s being held in garde à vue, the French form of police custody before any charge.

He hasn’t been charged and is presumed innocent.

Sparks, Nev.: Supreme Court Orders New Trial in 2021 Murder

The Nevada Supreme Court on Thursday overturned Katrina Carvalho’s first-degree murder conviction in the 2021 shooting death of Vintell Johnson, 25, in Sparks. A three-justice panel ordered a new trial, which will be the case’s third, and said it must be heard by a judge other than Washoe County District Judge Egan Walker, This Is Reno reports.

Carvalho’s defence argued at trial that the evidence pointed equally to her sister. During closing arguments, Walker twice sustained prosecution objections to that line and told jurors not to speculate about anyone else’s guilt. “Improperly removing a theory of defense from the jury’s consideration is reversible error,” Justice Lidia Stiglich wrote. The court rejected her claims that her right to a speedy trial was violated and that the evidence was too weak to convict.

Carvalho remains charged and is presumed innocent.

Meerut: Two Arrested After Police Shootout Over Woman’s Murder

Police in Meerut say they’ve arrested two men wanted for the Sept. 13 murder and robbery of Vimla Devi, of Ganeshpur village in the Hastinapur area. Police say she was out for an early-morning walk when she was struck on the head with a brick and robbed of her gold jewellery, anklets and phone.

According to police, the two opened fire on a team that tried to stop them near the Mawana-Hastinapur border late Friday, and officers fired back. One of them, named by police as Shivam alias Shubham, was shot in both legs and taken to hospital. The other, Koshendra alias Gullu, ran but was caught after a search, Mawana Circle Officer Pankaj Lavania told PTI. Police say they recovered a country-made pistol, two phones and jewellery.

The account of the shootout comes from police. Both men are presumed innocent.
