Nashville: Divided Appeals Court Stays Christa Pike’s Execution

A three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit stayed Christa Gail Pike’s execution Wednesday morning, 2–1. AP reports the order arrived about 9 a.m. Central, roughly an hour before Tennessee planned to begin the lethal injection at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution, with witnesses already gathered. The order in In re Christa Gail Pike, No. 26-5864, reads: “it is ORDERED that execution of the sentence of death upon the movant is STAYED until further order of this court.” Judge Jane B. Stranch wrote it and Judge Moore concurred. Judge Griffin dissented. The case continues from The Crime Ledger: September 29, 2026, when the U.S. Supreme Court refused to halt the execution.

The dispute is procedural. A federal judge in Chattanooga treated Pike’s Rule 60(b)(6) motion to reopen her habeas case as a second or successive petition and sent it up to the Sixth Circuit. Pike wants it sent back. Her lawyers say the State has now conceded her history of child sexual abuse and rape, which they argue “erodes the foundation” of her state court proceedings. The majority said “a stay of Pike’s execution is necessary” to “properly analyze the parties’ fully briefed arguments and resolve the issues on the merits.” Griffin called the filing “another last-ditch meritless effort to delay a lawful execution.” Pike, now 50, was convicted of first-degree murder in 1996 with her then-boyfriend in the 1995 killing of Colleen Slemmer, 19, their classmate at a job-training facility in Knoxville, and sentenced to death. She retains appeal rights.

Tennessee’s attorney general went straight to the U.S. Supreme Court. The application to vacate the stay, filed in the warden’s name as Kenneth Nelsen, Warden v. Christa Gail Pike, No. 26A428, was docketed Wednesday and submitted to Justice Kavanaugh. “The Sixth Circuit granted a stay—that Pike did not even request—without determining that Pike is likely to succeed on the merits,” the state wrote, in an application the office gave to The Tennessean. Pike’s lawyers filed a response asking the Court to leave the stay in place; the warden filed a reply. AP reports witnesses and media stayed at the prison in case the justices let the execution go ahead. The Supreme Court docket showed no ruling on the application as of 5:41 p.m. ET Wednesday. If the stay is lifted today, execution could go ahead today. The Tennessee Supreme Court only resets the date (at least seven days out) if Sept. 30 passes with the stay still in place.

Tabuk: Pilot Allegedly Stabbed Co-Pilot on Tel Aviv Flight

A flydubai Boeing 737 Max 8 flying from Dubai to Ben Gurion Airport diverted to Tabuk, in northwestern Saudi Arabia, on Wednesday morning after what the airline called “an altercation” in the flight deck. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said one pilot stabbed the other and apparently tried to crash the aircraft, and that a passenger and a crew member forced their way into the cockpit. Other crew flew the jet down. Flightradar24 data cited by AP show it dropping from about 33,000 feet to 17,000 feet in roughly a minute. Tabuk airport said the distress call came at 8:44 a.m. and the plane landed at 9:45 a.m. local time. Both pilots were hurt and taken to hospital.

Netanyahu said the alleged attacker was arrested and is being questioned by Saudi authorities. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz called it an “attempted jihadist terror attack.” flydubai said all passengers and crew are safe and that the motive is “unknown” and “subject to a formal investigation.” Saudi authorities have not named the pilot or described any charge.

Staškov: Pupil Held in Detention Unit as Inspectors Review Police

Interior Minister Matúš Šutaj Eštok said Wednesday, before the Slovak government’s away session in Uhrovec, that the 13-year-old accused in Tuesday’s knife attack at the Staškov primary school has been placed in a psychological detention institution. The Police Inspection Service is examining how officers in the Turzovka district handled a criminal complaint the school filed five days before the attack, about an incident the week before. Inspection spokesperson Andrea Dobiášová confirmed the review. Investigators from the police Office for Combating Organised Crime searched the pupil’s home and questioned several witnesses. The case is being handled as premeditated murder. The attack was first reported in The Crime Ledger: September 29, 2026.

Health Minister Kamil Šaško said the injured schoolgirl remains in intensive care in extremely serious condition. The teacher killed was 61. A second teacher, 44, survived. The cabinet agreed to fast-track a bill on protection against radicalization, and the interior minister raised a debate on the age of criminal responsibility. Slovakia’s crisis line is 0800 500 333. Ekurhuleni: Ramaphosa Counts 11 Women Found Dead Since July

In a televised address Tuesday night, President Cyril Ramaphosa said the body of another woman was found in Springs on Sunday, bringing to 11 the number of women’s bodies found in Ekurhuleni since July. Police “have not found evidence establishing that these killings were committed by a single perpetrator,” he said, and “all possibilities remain under investigation.” The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research is helping with digital forensics. Detectives, Crime Intelligence, investigative psychologists and forensic specialists are on the case.

Ramaphosa said arrests have been made in some of the deaths, including the man charged in the killing of Ntombifuthu Nxumalo, whose case ran on The Crime Ledger: September 29, 2026. Two suspects have appeared in court over Jabulile Ntimba’s death, and one is in custody over Busisiwe Mahlangu’s. Hong Kong: Abby Choi’s Ex-Husband and In-Laws Go on Trial

Alex Kwong, his father, Kwong Kau, and his brother Anthony Kwong pleaded not guilty Wednesday to murdering model and influencer Abby Choi, 28, as their trial opened before Judge Brian Keith and a nine-person jury. Police found parts of Choi’s body at a suburban house in 2023. Alex and Anthony Kwong pleaded guilty to preventing the lawful burial of a body. The three face life in prison if convicted of murder.

Prosecutor Charlotte Draycott said the relationship soured in 2022 after Choi tried to sell a luxury flat she had bought for HK$60 million and registered in her former father-in-law’s name. Kwong Kau, 68, a retired police sergeant, became “extremely resentful and angry,” she said, and the prosecution alleges the three “decided they would do it together.” All three are presumed innocent of murder.

Kobe: Former Gang Boss, 79, Arrested After Two Shootings

Masayuki Akata, 58, who ran a company and lived in Kobe’s Higashinada Ward, was shot in the abdomen at about 1:15 p.m. Wednesday on a street in Sakaguchi-dori, Chuo Ward, and died in hospital. Ten minutes later and about 4.5 kilometres southwest, in Arata-cho, Hyogo Ward, a 54-year-old man was shot from behind in the right side inside a car parked on private property. He was seriously injured. An acquaintance of Akata’s told the Kobe Shimbun the man worked for Akata’s company.

Hyogo Ward officers made an emergency arrest of Naoto Kametani, 79, unemployed, of Kumochi-cho in Chuo Ward, just after 2 p.m. about 20 metres from the second scene, on suspicion of the attempted murder of the 54-year-old. Investigative sources say he once led a group affiliated with the Yamaguchi-gumi. Police say he admits the allegation and has suggested he was involved in the Chuo Ward shooting. They believe he shot Akata, then rode to Hyogo Ward with the second man. A handgun was seized at the Hyogo Ward scene. The prefectural police’s organized-crime division says it has no information pointing to a gang conflict and believes he acted alone. Kametani hasn’t been charged, and the allegation is unproven.

Starke: Florida Executes Curtis Beasley, 77

Florida executed Curtis Wilkie Beasley, 77, by lethal injection Tuesday at Florida State Prison near Starke. It was Florida’s 16th execution this year and the 29th in the United States, AP reports. Florida has two more scheduled in October. Johannesburg: Tshuma’s Local Case Stalls on Plea Deal

Ndodana Tshuma, wanted in Britain on three murder charges over the deaths of his wife, Nothabo Zandile Tshuma, and their two daughters, appeared briefly in Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday. His South African case was postponed to Oct. 21 because the State and the defence haven’t finished a plea and sentence agreement. Magistrate Sindisiwe Malindi had earlier pointed to discrepancies in the draft and said it had to be properly prepared before the court would accept it.

The local charges cover illegal entry and an unlicensed firearm found when he was arrested in Kensington, Johannesburg, in July. Tshuma has admitted those charges, eNCA reports. Britain’s formal extradition request is a separate proceeding before the same court, and Jacaranda FM reports it was expected to resume Thursday. He is presumed innocent of the murder charges.

Gurranang: Accused Named as Police Link Both Deaths

Police allege Nicholas Scott, 32, a neighbour, killed a 79-year-old man found inside a home on a property at Gurranang, about 25 km north of Grafton, two weeks ago, and then “set upon” the 59-year-old man found in a shed there on Monday. Homicide Squad commander Det. Supt. Joe Doueihi said Wednesday that the two dead men were related, and 7NEWS reports they were father and son. The younger man had come to NSW to help police and to sort out the older man’s estate.

Scott is charged with two counts of murder and stealing a motor vehicle. He appeared briefly in court Wednesday and didn’t apply for bail. The charges first ran, before police had named him, on The Crime Ledger: September 29, 2026. He is entitled to the presumption of innocence.

Oshawa: Jury Hears Closings in Jennifer Polak’s Killing

Kyle Severin, 37, of Ajax, concedes he caused the death of his girlfriend, Jennifer Polak, in his Hillman Drive basement apartment in March 2024. The question for the jury at his second-degree murder trial in Oshawa is intent. Defence lawyer Krystal Manitius argued in her closing Tuesday that he was too intoxicated on cocaine and a sleeping pill to form the intent for murder, and that he woke to find Polak covered in blood and called 911.

Assistant Crown Attorney Julie O’Connor told the jury he killed Polak because he was angry, not because he was intoxicated. She argued that the gap in his phone use between 7:30 and 11 p.m. was when the killing happened. Superior Court Justice Marcella Henschel will instruct the jury Thursday. Severin is presumed innocent of murder.

Cutro: Mother and Son Arrested Two Years After Man Vanished

Carabinieri in Crotone arrested a 60-year-old woman who was married to Salvatore Giglio, and their 28-year-old son. Giglio, 69, disappeared from Cutro in September 2024. A preliminary-investigations judge ordered both jailed on suspicion of murder and concealing a corpse. Investigators believe Giglio was killed at home on Sept. 21, 2024, the day she gave as the date he went missing. She reported him missing about a week later. His body hasn’t been found. Carabinieri suspect it was thrown into the Tacina river, and RIS forensic officers and divers from Messina have searched for it.

A neighbour’s security camera was central, Sky TG24 reports. It recorded raised voices in the family courtyard at noon that day and, two days later, the two loading a car. Prosecutors led by Domenico Guarascio say mother and son reported the disappearance late and agreed on their accounts. An economic motive is the leading theory. Mother and son are presumed innocent, and neither has been tried.

On Sept. 24 last year he had reported her missing, saying she left on Aug. 14 after an argument.

Police began questioning him voluntarily in August. Acting on his statements, they searched the river from Sept. 17 to Sept. 20.
