Prosecutors in Przemyśl drew up murder charges Friday against Ihor M., the 31-year-old Ukrainian accused of stabbing five people on the grounds of Jarosław’s Benedictine abbey, but court psychiatrists said he was too acutely psychotic for the charges to be formally read, and a three-month hospital detention motion was headed to the Jarosław district court. Montreal police had announced no arrest in the killing of Canada Revenue Agency employee Leïla Ben Salem, 45, a day after Prime Minister Mark Carney opened Question Period with her name. In Miami County, Ohio, Caleb Flynn’s former mistress finished two days of reading their messages aloud, and an Ohio BCI agent walked jurors through deleted apps and AI-generated songs on Flynn’s iPhone. Invercargill District Court upgraded the Otautau case to a joint murder charge against two 19-year-olds. Stafford Crown Court jailed Kenneth Newton and Melanie James for life over the months of cruelty that killed Rubin Blount in Tamworth. A Milimani court let Kenya’s DCI hold four men for 15 days after ballistics tied a serving constable’s issued Ceska pistol to lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu’s roadside killing. KwaZulu-Natal police arrested five and shot dead a sixth man after a three-hour standoff at Emaplasini, Inanda, in the April ambush that killed Crime Intelligence officers Capt. Louis Nel and Sgt. Mandla Khuzwayo. Belfast Magistrates’ Court put a name — Paul Drew, 41, of Tallaght — to the Robbie Lawlor murder charge. An Ascension Parish jury convicted Kalvin Forcell in the Gonzales killings of Christina Lynn Artus and her 1-year-old daughter. Jarosław: Abbey Stabbing Suspect Faces Murder Charge
The district prosecutor’s office in Przemyśl said Friday it had drawn up charges of murder, attempted murder and causing bodily harm against Ihor M., a 31-year-old Ukrainian whose surname is withheld under Polish privacy law, a day after five people were stabbed on the grounds of the Benedictine Sisters’ abbey in Jarosław, about 30 kilometres from the Ukrainian border. He faces life if convicted.
By Friday afternoon, court-appointed psychiatrists told Przemyśl prosecutors he was in an acute psychotic state that blocks questioning for now, so the charges still have not been formally read to him; he needs antipsychotic treatment and remains hospitalized with his own wounds. The Jarosław district prosecutor’s office said it was sending a three-month detention motion for hospital execution to the district court, with a hearing possible Saturday, and a court-appointed lawyer already representing him. There is no motive. AFP, citing prosecutors, says he entered Poland from Germany overnight intending to drive on to Ukraine, was turned back at the Korczowa crossing because his car lacked mandatory insurance, went back to Jarosław, allegedly took a knife from the abbey kitchen and began stabbing; police got the call around 9:30 a.m. Thursday on Benedyktyńska Street. The five were three clergy and two laypeople — four men and a woman. One priest died in hospital. The other four are stable, one in serious but stable condition after two life-saving operations, according to PAP via Rzeczpospolita. Police had not released the priest’s name. Police arrested the man at the scene; he did not resist. Ihor M. is presumed innocent.

Montreal: No Arrest Yet in CRA Worker’s Killing
Leïla Ben Salem, 45, worked for the Canada Revenue Agency. Montreal police answering a welfare-check call Tuesday afternoon found her in her apartment on René-Lévesque Boulevard near Saint-Christophe Street, in the Ville-Marie borough; she was pronounced dead at the scene, and the SPVM logged it as the city’s 19th homicide of 2026. The Union of Taxation Employees released her name. Police say officers have spoken with a person of interest, but as of Thursday afternoon there had been no arrest.
La Presse, citing its sources, reports a man forced his way into the apartment while she was in a work training session by videoconference, that the colleague on the call phoned 911, and that she was struck with a blunt object; it says the main suspect is known to police, had not been found, and has no established link to her. Global News, citing police sources, reported she was on a work-related Zoom call when she was attacked. SPVM has not publicly confirmed the video-call account, though Noovo Info quoted spokesperson Raphaël Bergeron as saying the weapon being analysed was possibly a blunt object. On Thursday, Carney told the House of Commons she was serving Canadians “at the time of her assault” and that Ottawa would back police “so that the perpetrator of this shameful crime pays the full price.” Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre called her “a treasured member of the public service.” Nobody has been charged.

Tipp City: Texts and AI Songs at the Flynn Murder Trial
Alleigha Botner, 24, spent Wednesday and Thursday on the stand in Miami County, Ohio. Asked how she feels about Caleb Flynn now, she said: “I hate him.” Flynn, 40, a former music pastor who competed on season 12 of “American Idol,” is on trial accused of shooting his wife, Ashley Flynn, 37, twice in the back of the head as she slept in their Tipp City home on Feb. 16, then staging a break-in and calling 911 to report an intruder. The gun has not been recovered. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges and has said he was in another room.
Botner, who met him as an intern at his church, testified to an affair of about 18 months. Prosecutors put the messages between them at more than 107,000. In one dated Aug. 22, 2025, Flynn wrote that he had stayed up until 4 a.m. “thinking of ways to kill her and not going to jail”; her reply pushed divorce, and under cross-examination she said, “I always meant divorce.” She admitted she first told the FBI she didn’t believe he’d done it. Later Thursday, Ohio BCI special agent Joseph Wilhelm testified about data from 12 devices: several apps were uninstalled from Flynn’s iPhone in the days before the killing, including Instagram, GroupMe and an AI song generator; AI-generated audio files tied to the affair were recovered; and AirPods may have been connected and worn around the time of the shooting. Testimony resumed Friday. Flynn is presumed innocent.

Otautau: Teens Jointly Charged With Child’s Murder
Two 19-year-olds, a man and a woman, were jointly charged Friday with murdering a young child from Otautau, a Southland settlement of about 800 people. The man appeared in person at Invercargill District Court; the woman appeared by audio-visual link. Judge Mark Williams declined bail for both, continued their interim name suppression and remanded them in custody to an Oct. 13 High Court appearance.
They had first appeared Monday on a charge of causing grievous bodily harm. The child was found critically injured at an Otautau property Sunday evening and died Wednesday at Starship Children’s Hospital in Auckland. Court documents say the injuries were caused between Aug. 28 and Sept. 20. Police have not named the child. Det. Insp. Stu Harvey said earlier in the week that police would keep supporting the wider family through the court process. Both accused are presumed innocent.

Tamworth: Life for Couple Who Tortured Rubin Blount
When Rubin Blount died in November 2022 he weighed 40kg. Doctors found 50 rib fractures, spinal fractures, burns, extensive pneumonia and severe infection. On Friday at Stafford Crown Court, his stepbrother Kenneth Newton, 58, and Newton’s partner Melanie James, 64, both from Birmingham, were each jailed for life with a minimum of 21 years for his murder.
He was 28. Prosecutor Jennifer Josephs KC told the court he was “considerably mentally impaired.” At the Tamworth address he shared with the couple, he was made to “stand to attention,” left lying in his own urine and made to eat out of bins, and videos shown to the jury captured them mocking him. He fell ill on Nov. 27, 2022, went into cardiac arrest on reaching hospital and died three days later. Mrs Justice Jefford said they had abused a position of trust and had “no doubt” they sought help only out of concern for themselves. Someone in the public gallery shouted “rot in hell.” His mother, Jeanette Blount, said in a statement read to the court that he “deserved compassion, dignity and a chance to live his life,” adding: “His life mattered.”

Nairobi: DCI Ties Constable’s Pistol to Mbobu Killing
Kenya’s Directorate of Criminal Investigations says the gun that killed lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu was a police officer’s own. DCI Director Mohamed Amin said Thursday that ballistics confirmed the Ceska pistol issued to Police Constable Julius Cheruiyot of Nairobi Area on Sept. 9, 2025, was the weapon used that day, when Mbobu, a former chair of the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal, was shot eight times in his car on Magadi Road near Brookhouse International School.
On Friday a Milimani court gave detectives 15 days to hold four suspects, listed in the court report as Julius Cheruyot, Nicholas Lausa Lemiso, Noah Kipkirui Langat and Kennedy Kipkemei. DCI Inspector Patrick Wachira told the court the killing was a “commando-style” operation, and the DCI alleges one suspect fired while another provided motorcycle transport; CCTV allegedly showed two people trailing Mbobu on an unmarked motorbike. The Star reports detectives found Langat already in Pangani police cells on an unrelated traffic matter. Amin also alleged that Inspector Kenneth Sang, still at large, coordinated the operation with Rose Mbithe, who is in custody in the separate Dr Victoria Mutiso murder case; Mbobu had represented Mutiso’s husband, Prof. David Ndetei. No charges have been filed. All four are presumed innocent.

Inanda: Suspect Killed, Five Held in Police Ambush Case
On April 30, Crime Intelligence officers Capt. Louis Nel and Sgt. Mandla Khuzwayo were driving an unmarked state vehicle on Flanders Drive in Mount Edgecombe, north of Durban, when gunmen chased them and fired high-calibre rounds into it. Nel died at the wheel; Khuzwayo died later in hospital. Early Friday, KwaZulu-Natal police ran what they called an intelligence-led operation in a prosecutor-guided investigation and arrested five suspects in Pinetown, Amanzimtoti, Mandeni and Newlands West.
A sixth man, wanted for the killings, refused police instructions and fired from inside a house at Emaplasini, Inanda, for about three hours, SAPS spokesperson Col. Robert Netshiunda said. He released his girlfriend during negotiations and was then shot dead. A Special Task Force officer was shot in the hand and treated. The five are likely to appear in court Monday, Sept. 28. Police have released no names. The five arrested are presumed innocent.

Belfast: Accused in Lawlor Murder Named in Court
Thursday’s charge now has a name attached. Paul Drew, 41, of Whitebrook Park, Tallaght, Dublin, appeared at Belfast Magistrates’ Court on Friday charged with murdering Robbie Lawlor, 36, who was shot multiple times outside a house on Etna Drive in Ardoyne in April 2020, and with possessing a firearm or ammunition with intent to endanger life or cause serious damage to property. He was arrested in Liverpool on Wednesday.
Drew spoke only to confirm he understood the charges. A detective told the court there was a “correlation of CCTV and telecom enquiries” and that work “may take some time.” The defence is preparing a bail package; the case returns Sept. 28. Lawlor had himself been a suspect in the abduction and murder of Drogheda teenager Keane Mulready-Woods. Drew is presumed innocent.

Gonzales: Forcell Guilty in Mobile-Home Double Murder
An Ascension Parish jury on Thursday found Kalvin Forcell guilty of two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Christina Lynn Artus, 41, and her 1-year-old daughter — Forcell’s child too, per WBRZ — found shot to death on Jan. 14, 2024, at the Oak Village Mobile Home Park near Highway 30 in Gonzales, Louisiana. Investigators had described it as a domestic-violence shooting.
Officials told WBRZ that Artus was working in the yard outside her home when she was shot. WBRZ reported that Forcell then drove to a Dollar General lot, tried the doors of parked vehicles, got into one, and ended up inside a residence where he was held at gunpoint until deputies arrived. Jurors also convicted him of possession of a firearm by a felon, attempted simple burglary of a vehicle, attempted theft of a motor vehicle and unauthorized entry of an inhabited dwelling. The murder counts carry mandatory life; sentencing is set for Dec. 7.

Shikokuchuo: 28 Years for Starbucks Terrace Shooting
Yuichiro Ishikawa, 49, was on the terrace of the Starbucks at Aeon Town Kawanoe in Shikokuchuo, Ehime Prefecture, around 4 p.m. on Jan. 14, 2024, when three rounds from a revolver killed him. On Friday a lay-judge panel at Matsuyama District Court sentenced Yuichiro Maetani, 64 and unemployed, to 28 years for murder and firearms offences. Prosecutors had sought 30.
Ehime police issued a public wanted notice after the shooting and found and arrested Maetani at a house in Kurashiki, Okayama Prefecture, in March 2024. The Ehime Shimbun describes him as a former executive of a designated crime syndicate and reports the court found a strong intent to kill and real public alarm, but also weighed as mitigating that the victim’s conduct around a local autumn festival had influenced the motive; the revolver and 97 rounds were ordered forfeited. Gunfire is rare in Japan: the National Police Agency counted three firearm-discharge incidents nationwide in 2024 and one in 2025. Kyodo carried the verdict nationally.

Ibirapitanga: Two Held Over Businessman Found in Car
Valdiney Fernandes Santos, 56, left home on June 2 to meet someone interested in buying a rural property of his. Three days later he was found dead in an abandoned car in the Sete Voltas area of Ibirapitanga, in southern Bahia, with a stab wound. On Thursday, Bahia’s Civil Police served temporary arrest and search warrants and detained a 46-year-old man and a 42-year-old woman in Ipiaú and Ibirapitanga.
Investigators say Santos had been in an extramarital relationship with the arrested woman. They seized six phones, a bladed weapon and a flash drive, all headed to forensics to help establish how the killing unfolded and whether others were involved. The arrests were the third phase of Operação Sete Voltas, run by the Ibirapitanga police station with the Ilhéus regional command (7ª Coorpin) and the Military Police. Neither suspect has been named; both are presumed innocent.
