The Crime Ledger: September 2, 2026

Daily Breaking True Crime Briefing
As of: September 2, 2026, evening ET
Scope: Last day and a half, worldwide. Plymouth, Las Vegas, Provo, Kentville.

Plymouth’s Clancy jury went home deadlocked a second time after a “dynamite” charge. In Las Vegas, Duane Davis became the first person convicted in Tupac Shakur’s killing, with an appeal already planned. In Provo, Tyler Robinson was bound over for trial in Charlie Kirk’s killing with the death penalty still possible. And in Kentville, Dale Toole pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the death of music teacher Esther Jones.

Clancy Jury Hits Second Deadlock

Plymouth Superior Court ran out of daylight again Wednesday. After roughly 28-30 hours across five days, the 12 jurors told Judge William Sullivan they still couldn’t agree whether Lindsay Clancy is criminally responsible for killing her three children in Duxbury in January 2023. He’d already given them the first keep-going push Tuesday. Wednesday’s second impasse brought the Tuey-Rodriguez “dynamite” instruction. They’re back Thursday morning.

Clancy, 36, a former labor and delivery nurse, doesn’t deny strangling Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months. Defense says postpartum psychosis and a ruined medication regimen erased criminal responsibility. Prosecutors say she planned it, cleared her husband out on errands, and knew what she was doing. Options on the table: first-degree, second-degree, manslaughter, straight not guilty, or not guilty by reason of lack of criminal responsibility. Kevin Reddington said he’d “try it next week” if a hung jury lands.

Same courthouse, different case: Dawn Light, 56, of Sutton, a retired nurse who called herself a Clancy supporter, was arraigned Wednesday on an intimidation-of-jurors charge after State Police say she filmed jurors leaving court Tuesday. She denies intending to record them. A not-guilty plea was entered. Released on personal recognizance with stay-away orders. Sullivan questioned jurors one by one about impartiality before sending them out again.

National livestream, maternal mental-health fault lines, and a real mistrial clock.

Tupac Case: First Conviction, Appeal Already Teed Up

Monday in Las Vegas, a Clark County jury took under three hours to convict Duane “Keffe D” Davis, 63, of first-degree murder with a deadly weapon for orchestrating the Sept. 7, 1996 drive-by that killed Tupac Shakur. Sentencing is Oct. 13. Life without parole is on the table. Prosecutors cast him as the South Side Compton Crips “shot caller” who supplied the gun after his nephew was beaten at the MGM hours earlier. The case leaned on Davis’s own words: a 2008 proffer interview, later media chatter, and his memoir.

Tuesday: defense lawyer Michael Sanft told NBC the appeal fight was mapped before jury selection, aimed at the ruling that let jurors hear those proffer statements. Clark County DA Steven Wolfson said prosecutors won’t pile on gang enhancements, largely because of Davis’s age, and that a floor around 40 years is in play. Davis has said he plans to appeal.

First criminal conviction in a 30-year cold case. The appellate fight over self-incriminating public bragging starts now.

Robinson Bound Over; Death Penalty Stays Live

In Provo on Tuesday, Utah District Judge Tony Graf found probable cause for Tyler Robinson, 23, to stand trial on aggravated murder and related counts in the Sept. 10, 2025 shooting of Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University in Orem. The judge kept the capital aggravator in play. Prosecutors argued firing toward a crowded tent put others at great risk. Not-guilty pleas were entered. Next hearing Oct. 23 for a trial date.

Prosecutors say DNA ties Robinson to a rifle, towel, and screwdriver. They cite roommate admissions, campus video, and engraved casings. Defense has challenged experts and livestream cameras and noted no one else in the crowd was hit. Kirk’s family called the ruling a step toward justice. Robinson turned himself in the day after the shooting. He is presumed innocent.

Capital case clears the bind-over gate nearly a year after Kirk was shot.

Robinson’s lawyers entered not-guilty pleas to all seven counts. Update, Oct. 11, 2026: Judge Graf has ordered both sides to submit scheduling estimates and expects to set a trial date at an Oct. 23 pretrial conference, KSL and the Daily Herald report. He is presumed innocent.

Kentville Plea in Esther Jones Killing

Dale Allen Toole, 56, of Morden, Kings County, pleaded guilty Tuesday in Nova Scotia Supreme Court in Kentville to second-degree murder in the Aug. 31, 2024 death of music teacher Esther Jones in Greenwood. He’d faced first-degree. Justice Gail Gatchalian accepted the plea. An agreed statement of facts has him entering the former Kingston Bible College Academy, causing Jones’s death, and removing and disposing of her body. Cameras. DNA on gas cans and a truck. Flight toward Mexico stopped by U.S. inadmissibility. Her remains have not been found. Motive isn’t in the agreed facts.

Family reaction split: some relieved to lock a conviction, others furious the Crown dropped first-degree. Status update Oct. 16. Parole ineligibility will be fought between the 10- and 25-year poles.

Body still missing. Family split over the charge drop.

Update, Oct. 11, 2026: Police have since recovered Esther Jones’s remains from woods in Annapolis County, CBC News reports. The case returns to Nova Scotia Supreme Court on Oct. 16 to set a sentencing date; second-degree murder carries a mandatory life sentence with parole ineligibility of 10 to 25 years.

A dramatic, editorial chiaroscuro portrait setting of an 18th-century French aristocratic study slowly transitioning into a shadowed fortress prison cell. Sunlight streams through a tall, iron-barred arched window, casting long, stark shadows across cold stone walls and polished wood. In the foreground, a dark mahogany desk holds an unraveling parchment scroll covered in dense black ink handwriting, alongside an antique quill, a brass inkwell, melted crimson wax seals, and a heavy ring of iron keys. A luxurious dark velvet coat drapes over a chair in the dim background, symbolizing decaying power and long confinement. Rich, cinematic lighting, deep moody tones, highly detailed textures of aged paper, worn velvet, and stone.
