Daily Breaking True Crime Briefing
As of: October 18, 2026 (5:30 p.m. ET)
Scope: Sunday’s board covers cases reported from Saturday, Oct. 17, through Sunday afternoon, Oct. 18, ET, from police, court and prosecutor statements and newsrooms in North America, Europe, Latin America, Africa, the Middle East and Asia.

A Kolkata court sent seven people, including two office bearers of the organising committee, to police custody until Oct. 28 after a stampede at the Chorbagan Durga Puja pandal killed 19 people on Saturday evening. In Kansas, a truck drove through a youth soccer game at Wichita’s Stryker Sports Complex, killing a 6-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man, and the 34-year-old driver has been released without charge pending toxicology tests. Former Guatemalan prosecutor Juan Francisco Solórzano Foppa was shot dead at a Saturday football match in Guatemala City, and a judge freed the two brothers police had detained. Brussels prosecutors announced six arrests in Paris, Almería and Belgium over the killing of police officer Nordine El Talbi. Chihuahua police arrested former state attorney general César Jáuregui over CIA personnel who took part in a drug lab raid, a Honduran judge sent to prison a suspect arrested 29 years after the kidnap and killing of a former president’s son, and Edmonton police charged three men with first-degree murder in a shooting outside a trades school. The rest of the board runs from a South African comedian’s stabbing and a 17-year-old killed in Ashkelon to a father and son indicted in Ohio, a care home knife attack in Germany and a 642-year sentence for an MS-13 member in El Salvador.

Kolkata Police have arrested seven people, including the secretary and vice president of the Chorbagan Sarbajanin Durga Puja committee, after a stampede at the north Kolkata pandal killed at least 19 people on Saturday evening. Officers at Girish Park police station registered a suo motu case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder against the organisers and others overnight, and the seven were among 14 people detained, The Hindu reported.

Police named the arrested men as committee secretary Raj Kumar Sewda, 48, vice president Santanu Dubey, 55, Biplab Mukherjee, 48, who worked on the bamboo structure, Koushik Saha, 53, and Pintu Dey, 51, who handled crowd control and VIP passes, and private security in-charges Suman Chakraborty, 30, and Rajesh Pal, 29, according to ANI as cited by The Economic Times.

The crush came amid heavy rain on Maha Saptami. A senior officer told PTI that investigators had found “gross mismanagement,” with no clear crowd plan, too few police and private guards, narrow gates and a narrow approach road, and visitors trying to flee through the entrance. Police also obtained video of an announcement telling people to leave because the structure was allegedly about to collapse. The pandal has been sealed, and police asked several other large pujas to close temporarily. More arrests may follow, an officer said.

On Sunday the Bankshall Court sent all seven to police custody until Oct. 28, 10 days rather than the 14 police had asked for, India Today NE and Times Now reported. Defence lawyer MD Yashim Raheman said his clients were visitors who had stepped in to help with the rescue and had no role in organising the puja. Police said 25 people were injured, Times Now reported, and the officer in charge of Girish Park police station has been removed. The state government has ordered a Special Task Force (STF) probe and announced compensation of ₹25 lakh and a government job for one member of each victim’s family. All seven are presumed innocent.

Wichita, Kansas: Driver Released Without Charge After Truck Ploughs Through Youth Soccer Game, Killing Two

Adrian Cole, 6, and Nicholas Schafer, 35, both from McPherson and not related, were killed on Saturday afternoon when a pickup truck drove through a youth soccer game at the Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita, the Wichita Police Department said on Sunday. Ten people were hurt, and an 11th, a 61-year-old woman, went to hospital with medical complications police said were unrelated to the crash. The 34-year-old driver, a woman, was taken into custody and then released.

Wichita police Capt. Aaron Moses said 911 calls began at about 3:25 p.m. Officers found the truck at the west end of the field, with the driver still with it along with two juveniles who had been inside, while bystanders gave first aid to the injured. Five of the hurt are children aged 5 to 9, and the adults are 28 to 68. Moses said injuries ranged from bruises to “extremely severe.” He said the woman had been cooperative and that one of her children was believed to be playing at the complex, though not on that field. Police said on Sunday that she had been parked near the fields before driving the Chevrolet onto one of them.

“We know what happened, but now we’re working very hard to find out why it happened, and we’re not there yet,” Police Chief Joe Sullivan said. Police have interviewed more than 30 witnesses, including the two children in the truck, and are asking for photos and video. After consulting the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office, police released the driver pending toxicology results and a mechanical examination of the vehicle. No charge has been filed, and she has not been named. The city has cancelled all events at the complex until further notice, KMUW reported. She is presumed innocent.

Juan Francisco Solórzano Foppa, a 43-year-old former prosecutor and former head of Guatemala’s tax authority, was shot dead on Saturday morning during a football match at the Campo Marte sports complex in Zone 5 of Guatemala City. Gustavo Adolfo Aguilar Gamarro, 45, a worker at the national judo federation, was also killed. Investigators consider him a collateral victim, Infobae reported.

Infobae, citing the National Civil Police, said the attack happened at about 9:40 a.m. on a synthetic pitch and that at least 50 spent casings were found. Police stopped two brothers from Senahú, Alta Verapaz, about 10 minutes later on Boulevard San Isidro in Zone 16, after emergency calls described two people in FC Barcelona shirts. Police said a carbine was found hidden in a food delivery backpack. The older brother, 30, served in the army from 2017 to 2019. The brothers told reporters they were delivering food and asked investigators to check the cameras. Prosecutors ran gunshot residue tests on their hands on Saturday afternoon, Emisoras Unidas reported.

Interior Minister Marco Antonio Villeda said ballistic evidence points to at least two attackers and that the gun has not yet been matched to the scene. “We are not saying a priori that they are guilty,” he said. President Bernardo Arévalo condemned the “cowardly murder” and said those who ordered it must also face justice, Al Jazeera reported. Solórzano Foppa led the tax authority from 2016 to 2018 and had recently made public allegations about gangs and a disputed military operation in Zacapa.

On Sunday, after a first-statement hearing held behind closed doors at the Torre de Tribunales, a duty judge ruled falta de mérito (insufficient grounds to link them to the case) and ordered the two brothers freed and their motorcycle and belongings returned, La Hora and República reported. A police spokesman said the force respects the ruling. The Public Ministry said its investigation continues under seal and that it is working with international partners to identify everyone involved. The brothers have not been charged.

Brussels: Six Arrested in Paris, Almería and Belgium Over Killing of Officer Nordine El Talbi

Six suspects from Brussels, five adults and one minor, have been arrested over the killing of police officer Nordine El Talbi, Brussels prosecutor Julien Moinil told a press conference on Sunday. One was caught at a Paris railway station, three were arrested by Spain’s Guardia Civil in Almería, apparently on their way to Morocco, and two were held in Belgium, VRT and BRUZZ reported. Belgium has asked France and Spain to surrender the four held abroad.

El Talbi, 41, a member of the Brussels anti-robbery brigade with more than 15 years on the force, was shot in the head in Jette on Monday night and died shortly afterward. He had gone to scout the spot where a car carjacked in Tubize had been found earlier that evening. Moinil said five of the six suspects had been in that car, in which police later found drugs and three weapons. They are suspected of murder and criminal association, and all are known to prosecutors for drug dealing, according to BRUZZ.

The prosecutor gave no further detail and declined to address the theories that had circulated in the press. All six are presumed innocent.

Chihuahua, Mexico: Former State Prosecutor César Jáuregui Arrested Over CIA Agents in Drug Lab Raid

Chihuahua state police arrested former state attorney general César Gustavo Jáuregui Moreno at 10:20 a.m. on Saturday on La Cantera avenue in Chihuahua City, according to Mexico’s National Registry of Detentions, as reported by El Financiero and López-Dóriga Digital. A state judge had issued a warrant on Friday, in case 3055/2026, for illegal exercise of public service and “coalition,” a crime covering officials who conspire to act against the law.

The case stems from an April raid on a clandestine synthetic drug lab in El Pinal, in the municipality of Morelos, in which state investigators found that U.S. Central Intelligence Agency personnel had taken part without authorisation. On April 19, two CIA agents died when their vehicle went into a ravine, along with Pedro Román Oseguera Cervantes, director of the State Criminal Investigation Agency, and officer Manuel Genaro Méndez Montes, El Financiero reported. The same warrant also covers Guillermo Arturo Zuany Portillo, the office’s former head of strategic operations. His arrest had not been confirmed.

Federal Attorney General Ernestina Godoy said Jáuregui is also accused of treason in matters of national security, as the person mainly responsible for the agents’ illegal entry into Mexico, El País reported. She said there is evidence the CIA officers visited the state investigation agency’s offices several times “without any justification.” At his first appearance, Judge Alberto Simental agreed to a defence request to postpone the hearing because the file ran to eight volumes, and Jáuregui was held at state prison Cereso 1, N+ reported. The hearing resumed on Sunday morning. Norte Digital reported that the judge refused to admit Zuany Portillo’s statement against him because Zuany is himself charged and still sought on a warrant. No ruling on whether to bind him over for trial had been reported by late Sunday afternoon. Jáuregui is presumed innocent.

Honduran police have arrested Marco Antonio Ávila Castellanos on a long-standing kidnapping warrant in the 1997 abduction and killing of Ricardo Ernesto Maduro, son of former president Ricardo Maduro, El Heraldo and La Prensa reported. Agents of the Police Investigations Directorate (DPI) made the arrest in Tegucigalpa on Friday, Oct. 16, and on Saturday he was taken to the Integrated Criminal Justice Center in San Pedro Sula for an initial hearing.

The 25-year-old was kidnapped on April 23, 1997, as he left a supermarket he managed in San Pedro Sula. Armed men intercepted his car and fired on it, and the kidnappers then demanded a large ransom from his family, El Heraldo reported. He was killed. His father later served as president of Honduras.

Police commissioner Edgar Sandoval told Infobae the suspect, a bricklayer, was an alleged member of the Los Bustillo kidnapping gang and was “a fairly strong link in the organisation,” responsible for finding the vehicles and houses where victims were held while ransoms were negotiated. The arrest came under the national police’s Escudo Seguro operation. A duty criminal judge has kept in force the detention order first issued against him in September 1997 and sent him to the prison in El Progreso, Yoro, La Prensa and La Tribuna reported. The defence argued the case had lapsed under the statute of limitations, but the judge cited flight risk, and both papers said he had earlier walked free in another case through an “administrative error.” His initial hearing is set for Tuesday, Oct. 20, at 10 a.m. He is presumed innocent.

Five men go on trial Monday before the Bouches-du-Rhône assize court over a triple murder in late 2020 that included Brahim Chabane, the older brother of anti-drug campaigner Amine Kessaci. The hearings run until Nov. 6 under heavy security, ici and Le Figaro reported. Le Figaro said one of the alleged leaders of the DZ Mafia is among the accused.

Chabane, 22, was shot and then burned in a car set alight in a tunnel under the A55 at Les Pennes-Mirabeau, where investigators found the bodies of two men. A third man’s dismembered body was found about a week later in the boot of a burned car in L’Estaque, Marseille, according to ici. Investigators described the violence as drift “à la mexicaine.”

Five men were arrested within five months. They include Karim Harrat, extradited from Morocco in 2023 and already convicted in other cases, including the 2019 double murder at the Formule 1 hotel in Plan de Campagne, ici reported. Wiretaps allegedly caught one suspect boasting that he felt nothing while cutting up a body. Amine Kessaci took up his campaign after Chabane’s death. His younger brother Mehdi was shot dead in Marseille in November 2025. The five accused are presumed innocent.

Three young men have been charged with first-degree murder in Friday morning’s shooting outside a trades school in north-west Edmonton, Edmonton police said Saturday. Police named the victim as Justin Hunt, 28. He was shot near 160 Street and 118 Avenue at about 8:30 a.m. and died at the scene. An autopsy is set for Monday, CTV News Edmonton reported.

A suspect car was spotted and stopped on Highway 16 with help from Parkland RCMP, and its three occupants were taken into custody. Wol Akuei, 21, John Morris, 20, and John Ocwalla, 19, each face a first-degree murder charge, and Ocwalla is also charged with being an accessory after the fact to murder. Police believe the shooting was targeted.

The homicide unit is asking for dashcam or CCTV video of the car, a dark grey BMW 325i sedan with damage to the rear driver’s side fender and taillight and a licence plate hanging by one screw, taken between 8:15 and 8:45 a.m. Friday along 118 Avenue, Yellowhead Trail and Highway 60. This Ledger reported the shooting and the highway arrests on Oct. 17, before charges and names were released. All three are presumed innocent.

Three suspects aged 17 to 23 were arrested on Saturday afternoon, hours after Limpopo comedian and content creator Khadziyane Ndivhuwo, known to fans as Skeem Mafenya, was found stabbed to death in Malamulele. He was 20.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba said officers got a report at about 3:35 a.m. on Saturday of a person lying motionless in a yard at Madonsi Boltman B. A resident had heard a knock at the door and, looking through a window, saw a man bleeding heavily. Officers found him on the ground with multiple stab wounds to his upper body, and paramedics declared him dead at the scene.

The arrests followed what police called an intelligence-driven operation in the Malamulele area. The motive is unknown. The three are expected to appear in Malamulele Magistrate’s Court soon on a murder charge. Limpopo police commissioner Lt. Gen. Jan Petrus Scheepers condemned the “senseless killing.” None of the three has been named, and all are presumed innocent.

A 17-year-old boy was fatally stabbed in Ashkelon shortly before midnight on Saturday, and police have arrested two suspects and detained eight more people for questioning, Haaretz, Ynet and Kan Darom reported on Sunday.

Paramedics from Magen David Adom treated two injured people on Herzl Street and took the boy to Barzilai hospital in serious condition, where he was pronounced dead. A second person suffered light injuries. Kan Darom reported that an axe was found at the scene, according to MDA. Police said initial findings suggest the stabbing grew out of a criminal dispute between offenders involving the boy and the other injured person.

Southern District commander Haim Bublil assigned the murder investigation to the Lachish central unit (YAMAR Lachish). Haaretz, which keeps a count, reported that at least 217 people have been murdered in Israel since the start of the year, at least 178 of them Arab citizens. On Sunday the Ashkelon Magistrate’s Court extended the detention of two suspects, Walla reported. A third suspect, a minor who was stabbed in the brawl and remains in hospital, was not remanded because a required medical certificate arrived late, and a further hearing was expected on Monday. The boy has not been named. The suspects are presumed innocent.

A Hamilton County grand jury has indicted Aaron Peavy, 44, and his son Brian Peavy, 22, on murder charges in the death of Donald Jamar Hales, 45, who was shot outside Fricker’s Bar and Grill on Goodman Avenue in North College Hill on Sept. 27, WCPO and WLWT reported. Both were arrested at their home without incident on Friday evening and taken to the Hamilton County Justice Center.

Prosecutors say Aaron Peavy argued with Hales inside the restaurant, pulled a gun, forced him outside at gunpoint and struck him with the weapon. During the struggle the elder Peavy lost his gun, Hales drew his own, and Brian Peavy picked up his father’s weapon, according to the prosecutor’s account reported by WLWT. Hales’s gun went off as the three wrestled for it, and prosecutors say Brian Peavy then stepped back and fired six rounds, killing Hales. A second man was shot in the arm. A friend of Hales told FOX19 the fight began over trash talk during a football game.

Brian Peavy is indicted on two counts of murder, two of felonious assault and one of abduction. Aaron Peavy faces two counts of murder, four of felonious assault, two of kidnapping, two of abduction, and counts of illegal possession of a firearm in a liquor establishment and possessing criminal tools. Both are presumed innocent.

An 86-year-old resident died at the scene, and two other women, aged 81 and 83, were seriously injured, police and prosecutors said, according to dpa.

He faces one count of manslaughter (Totschlag) and two of attempted manslaughter combined with dangerous bodily harm. The 83-year-old was briefly in a life-threatening condition but has since stabilised, police said. The suspect, a German who according to dpa uses a wheelchair, was arrested without resistance and is expected to be held in a prison hospital.

A homicide squad is investigating. The motive and the man’s relationship to the three women remain unclear, and police and prosecutors have not commented on a tabloid report that he felt bullied. He is presumed innocent.

Model and influencer Shraddha Dubey, the main accused in the death of Lucknow businessman Shiva Sharma, spoke to the media for the first time on Sunday and denied killing him, saying he jumped from a fourth-floor building in front of her, Dainik Bhaskar English reported. “I did not kill Shiva. All the allegations are baseless,” she said, adding that CCTV footage would prove her innocence.

Shortly before, police raised the reward for information on Dubey, her sister Rashmi and their driver from ₹25,000 to ₹50,000 each, Bhaskar reported. All three have been on the run for nine days. Ten police teams are searching. She has filed an application to surrender before a Lucknow court. The Hindustan Times reported that police are tracking three Indian mobile numbers and one Nepali number and that leads into Nepal have repeatedly gone cold. In one instance she reportedly left a suspected safe house in Nepal about four hours before police arrived. “We are in regular touch with Nepal police who is helping us in the search,” said DCP (Central) Vikrant Vir.

Separately, a court in Saharanpur has summoned Dubey to appear on Oct. 30 in a cyber crime case involving cheating and IT Act charges, Bhaskar reported. She is presumed innocent.

A boy aged 2 years and 8 months died on Saturday after being shot during an attack on his father in San Baltazar Tetela, an outlying district of Puebla city, and two men have been detained, La Jornada de Oriente reported. The boy survived the initial shooting but died that morning at the Hospital General del Sur.

Initial inquiries indicate the attack was aimed at the boy’s father, Jonathan, 40, who survived. El Congresista reported that the boy was in his father’s arms when two men on a motorcycle opened fire before dawn at the junction of Avenida Independencia and Adolfo López Mateos. No motive has been officially established.

Municipal and state police searched the area and caught the two suspects in nearby San Pedro Zacachimalpa. They were identified as Steven “N,” 18, and a 22-year-old named Hugo “N.” The state prosecutor’s office is gathering ballistic and witness evidence. Both are presumed innocent.

Surveillance video showed Ladontae Wilburn walk into the store holding a handgun with a drum magazine, the letter says. Flowers, Tamayra Woods, 22, Kemo Jones, 25, and Tedarien Mitchell, 22, were taken to hospital in critical condition.

Ladontae Wilburn’s twin brother, Kavontae Wilburn, pleaded not guilty in Little Rock District Court on Friday to two counts of capital murder and a charge under the state’s Uniform Machine Gun Act. Both men are presumed innocent.

A judge in Rosario has ordered Paulo Alejandro Álvarez held in pretrial detention, accused of the femicide of Natalia Andrea Giménez, 35, who was killed in her second-floor flat in the Tablada neighbourhood in the early hours of Sept. 26, Infobae and Desarrollo Zonal reported. Judge Federico Rébola ruled at a hearing on Friday, Oct. 16, at the Centro de Justicia Penal.

Prosecutor Paula Barros of the special unit for highly harmful violence alleges Álvarez arrived by bicycle with a backpack and a blue motorcycle helmet, chained the bike to a post at about 5:57 a.m. and walked to the building. Prosecutors say he beat and stabbed her, and that some wounds were inflicted while she was still alive, which supports the charge of femicide with cruelty and treachery. The autopsy found she died of craniofacial and neck trauma, stab wounds and blood loss, Infobae reported. Her children found her body that evening. Cameras traced the suspect to a house in Villa Gobernador Gálvez, where he was arrested on Oct. 10.

The motive is still under analysis. The judge also jailed Germán Ángel “Pelado” Carrizo and Stela Maris Palacio for six months on charges of habitual aggravated usury. Prosecutors say they ran a high-interest lending operation in which Giménez owed money, with Carrizo allegedly running it from Penitentiary Unit No. 6. All three are presumed innocent.

Police in Namutumba district have arrested Halidi Zibwa, 25, on suspicion of killing his three-year-old stepbrother, Junior Tiba, who was found beheaded on Friday morning, Oct. 16, in Mpumiro parish, Bulange sub-county, New Vision and the Daily Monitor reported.

Busoga East police spokesperson Michael Kasadha said the boy’s mother, Joan Mukoda, was harvesting groundnuts in a garden at about 9 a.m. with her son when Zibwa came and took the child, saying he wanted to play with him, and then disappeared. When he did not come back, she began searching and found her son dead. “She was hoodwinked under the guise of playing with the little one, not knowing that he was on a deadly mission,” Kasadha said.

Her alarm drew residents, who caught Zibwa. Police arrived in time to rescue him from a mob trying to lynch him, the Monitor reported. New Vision said preliminary findings describe him as a drug user and that police had not yet found the object used. He is presumed innocent.

Beaumont police have arrested Patrick Brouchet, 65, on a murder charge in the shooting death of Kandace Washington, 32, KFDM reported. Officer Rodrick Williams said police were called to a shooting on North 10th Street at about 9 p.m. Saturday, found Washington dead at the scene and made contact with Brouchet, who was arrested.

As officers walked him to a patrol car at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday for the ride to jail, Brouchet told a KFDM crew that he shot Washington, calling it an accident and saying he was deeply sorry. He said the two “were involved in a relationship.” Asked whether he was claiming he thought she was an intruder, he said, “Yes, there was an intruder issue,” then said he wanted to talk with his attorney.

Police have not described the circumstances further, and the investigation is ongoing. A judge set his bond at $1 million on Sunday morning, with home confinement and GPS monitoring among the conditions, KFDM reported. Brouchet is presumed innocent.

A duty judge in Reinosa on Sunday ordered a 52-year-old man held in prison without bail over the deaths of two stepbrothers, aged 24 and 26, who were attacked with a bladed weapon in Mataporquera, Cantabria, early Friday. The man declined to testify, and the court opened proceedings for two alleged homicides, judicial sources told EFE, as reported by Cadena SER.

Police received several calls a little after 4 a.m. on Friday about a fight in the village. One victim died at the entrance to his home. The other was found in the street still alive and died at Tres Mares Hospital in Reinosa. The Guardia Civil said there had been an argument between the men and their neighbour the previous afternoon. Officers arrested the suspect at his home at 8:30 a.m. with judicial authorisation and found a blade with traces of blood.

El Diario Montañés reported that the victims’ family says the dispute began when the man allegedly attacked their five-year-old nephew on Thursday afternoon. Government delegate Pedro Casares said the suspect had numerous prior records and complaints. He is presumed innocent. This Ledger first reported the killings on Oct. 16.

A Netrokona court on Sunday sent a 22-year-old man to jail in the killing of journalist Lutfuzzaman Fakir Alif, who was shot dead in Durgapur on the night of Oct. 15, and set Monday to hear a police request to hold him for seven days of questioning, The Daily Star reported.

Police arrested the man in Durgapur overnight. Two men who allegedly fled to South Korea after a fatal assault at a used-car dealership in Kaohsiung’s Nanzih District were arrested on Saturday when they landed at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, Kaohsiung police said Sunday, according to Taiwan’s Central News Agency. South Korean police caught them after a request from Taiwan’s Criminal Investigation Bureau.

Prosecutors in Busto Arsizio have upgraded the investigation into the death of Pierina Buffon, 69, from road homicide to femicide. They allege her former partner, Fulvio Ielmini, 73, deliberately steered his Jaguar into the oncoming lane and hit her small car head-on on the Cassano Magnago bypass on Thursday, RaiNews and Il Fatto Quotidiano reported. Prosecutors are also alleging voluntary homicide aggravated by futile motives.

Il Giorno, citing investigators, said Ielmini was doing about 140 km/h at the moment of impact. Carabinieri searched his home overnight and seized documents and electronic devices, including a tablet, his lawyer Angelo Luini confirmed. Il Giorno reported that Buffon’s children had once found a GPS tracker on her car and that a satellite tracking device was seized at Ielmini’s home. Investigators are examining whether he used it to follow her. An autopsy and a crash reconstruction are due in the coming days.

The couple’s eight-year relationship ended in June at Buffon’s choice. Her family says he would not accept it. A stalking complaint was filed at the end of July, and her lawyer sent him two formal warnings in August and September. Ielmini is under guard in hospital in Varese. His lawyer says he insists it was an accident and has raised questions about his mental state. He is presumed innocent.

Scotland’s Crown Office has ordered a discretionary Fatal Accident Inquiry into the death of Daniel Greer, 33, who was murdered by his neighbour in Airdrie while the killer was out on bail, the London Evening Standard reported, citing PA. A Crown Office spokesperson said the Lord Advocate considers there are issues around the death “which merit further examination in the public interest.”

Nicholas Henry hit Greer with a shovel and stabbed him nine times in his own front garden on Oct. 17, 2020, then hid his body in Greer’s house, where his father found him two days later. Henry was on bail for another violent attack and had been arrested twice in the preceding months for violent and drug offences but released each time. He had been jailed for 12 years in 2011 for an attack that nearly severed a victim’s hand. He was jailed for a minimum of 21 years for the murder and died in prison in August, aged 49.

Greer’s mother, Amanda, welcomed the inquiry. “It’s not good enough to trust an electronic tag, a fortnightly check in with a social worker or to blame overcrowding prisons,” she said. “Innocent people literally die because of bad decisions and it needs to stop.”

Police spokesperson Adéle Myburgh said the provincial commissioner, Lt Gen Adams, urged residents to settle disputes without violence and to call police when conflicts escalate. None of those involved has been named. The suspects are presumed innocent.

Argentine police arrested Inti Camilo Cuba Vignolo, 38, at the Brazo Largo checkpoint in Entre Ríos province early Saturday. He is wanted in Uruguay over the armed robbery of the Banco República (BROU) branch in Pando and a homicide in Montevideo, Uruguay’s Interior Ministry said, El Debate and Teledoce reported.

He was a passenger in a private transfer heading from Buenos Aires to Colón. Asked for documents, he had none, tried to run and was quickly subdued, El Debate reported. Uruguay had requested an Interpol blue notice. The ministry said joint work by both countries’ police had established that he planned to enter Uruguay. Officers seized a 9mm Bersa TPR9 pistol, a .38 revolver, about half a kilo of suspected cocaine, seven phones and cash in dollars, Uruguayan pesos and Argentine pesos.

Investigators identify him as the robber who went in unmasked during the August raid on the Pando branch. He was already wanted over a killing on March 18 in Montevideo’s Reducto neighbourhood, Teledoce reported. Both countries are coordinating next steps. He is presumed innocent.

NSW Police have charged Rodney James Charles Tatt, 38, with eight offences, including wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and intentional choking, after a 42-year-old woman was allegedly stabbed several times in the head and torso with a kitchen knife at a home in Leeton on Thursday evening, ABC News and Region Riverina reported. The charges are domestic violence related.

Police were called at about 6:30 p.m. The man known to the woman had already left. He was arrested at about 2:45 p.m. Saturday in the Wagga Wagga suburb of Ashmont and refused bail. He was due before a bail court on Sunday, and the ABC said he is to face Griffith Local Court on Dec. 9. He is presumed innocent.

Jurors in the trial of Miguel Salguero-Olivares, charged with murder, burglary and rape in the 2012 killing of UNC student Faith Hedgepeth, heard from four new witnesses on Friday, the trial’s 15th day, The 9th Street Journal and ABC11 reported. Testimony from a state crime lab DNA analyst, Erin Ermish, ran into a third day that morning.

Eldis Cordero Ordonez, whose sister is married to the defendant’s uncle, testified through an interpreter that he worked with Salguero-Olivares and his mother at an Outback Steakhouse in Durham in 2010, and that some Outback workers, including relatives, lived at the apartment complex where Hedgepeth was found dead. He said he had previously told investigators he was afraid to testify because the two families know each other. He said the defendant’s mother had called him weeks ago and asked him only “to tell the truth.” Luis Lopez testified that he hosted a cookout in the complex’s picnic area on the night of Sept. 6, 2012, into the morning Hedgepeth was found. He said one guest was a stranger to him but he could not say whether it was the defendant.

State Bureau of Investigation agent Justin Heinrich testified that Salguero-Olivares was not on law enforcement’s radar until his 2021 DWI arrest. He walked jurors through phone records from Hedgepeth and her roommate, Karena Rosario, on the night of her death. ABC11 reported he described the years it took to identify a suspect. Salguero-Olivares is presumed innocent.

Porter Superior Court Judge Jeffrey Clymer on Friday sentenced Kuran Demetrius Kinley, 26, of Valparaiso, to 60 years for fatally shooting Trayveon Triplett at a Chicago Street apartment on June 2, 2025, the Chicago Tribune reported. “In reality, it is almost, if not, a life sentence,” Clymer said.

Kinley had pleaded guilty in May to murder with an enhancement, criminal recklessness and carrying a handgun. Under a new plea agreement entered Friday, he pleaded guilty only to murder with the enhancement and the other felony counts were dismissed. He still received the maximum 55 years for murder plus five years because he used a gun after a prior felony conviction, a 2020 Level 6 battery plea in Lake County, according to the Tribune.

In open court Kinley answered “correct” when read statements about his guilt. According to a probable cause statement, he lived in the same complex and was upset that Triplett was at the residence at the same time as his child, the Tribune reported.

Santa Rosa, California: Windsor Man Gets 95 Years to Life Under Three Strikes for Fatal Bar Stabbing

Sonoma County Judge Paige Hein on Friday sentenced Braulio Torres Garcia, 39, of Windsor, to one year plus 95 years to life in prison for the 2023 stabbing death of Asante Vandyke of Santa Rosa and assaults on three other people, the Sonoma County District Attorney’s Office said, according to Bay City News via SFGATE.

A jury convicted Garcia in February of second-degree murder and three counts of assault with a deadly weapon. Prosecutors said that in the early hours of Feb. 2, 2023, outside Gary’s at the Belvedere on Mendocino Avenue, he started a fight with Vandyke and stabbed him four times, then stabbed two of Vandyke’s friends and tried to stab a third person who intervened.

The term, 45 years to life for the murder plus two consecutive 25-to-life terms and a year for the knife, was imposed under California’s Three Strikes law because of two prior convictions, including robbery and assault with a firearm on a peace officer in 2008. He had been released early in May 2021 after state sentencing changes, prosecutors said. Richard Ponce, who prosecutors said helped Garcia during the attack, is serving 10 years.
