The Crime Ledger: October 7, 2026

Daily Breaking True Crime Briefing
As of: October 7, 2026 (about 6 p.m. ET)
Scope: Wednesday’s board covers cases reported from late morning Tuesday, Oct. 6, through late morning Wednesday, Oct. 7, ET, with custody, charge and court status rechecked as sources opened Wednesday evening. The stories come from police, court and prosecutor statements, wire services and local newsrooms in the United States, New Zealand, England, Belgium, South Africa, Ireland, Mexico, Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea, Canada, Kenya, Israel, Argentina, Ecuador, Guatemala, Chile, Brazil, Türkiye, Germany, Italy, Poland, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Papua New Guinea.

U.S. prosecutors in Seattle have charged a Bellingham resident with conspiring in February’s Tumbler Ridge school shooting in British Columbia, which killed eight people, six of them children. The Army set Dec. 3 for the Fort Hood gunman’s firing-squad execution, New Zealand’s Crown dropped its retrial of David Tamihere, and a Belgian murder trial stalled the morning after its guilty verdict. Courts handed down life terms in Wynberg, Rehovot, Tulse Hill and Carlow, three death sentences in Dhaka and long prison terms in Granite City, San José Pinula and São Paulo. Fresh charges and custody orders also landed in the Bronx, Edenderry, Hermosillo, Sydney, Calgary, Karacabey, Kundiawa and more than two dozen other places, while nine carried cases each took a new step.

Bellingham: Resident Charged Over Tumbler Ridge Shooting

James Cody Bryant, 30, of Bellingham, Washington, has been charged in the United States with conspiracy to murder persons in a foreign country over February’s mass shooting at a school in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, BBC News and The Globe and Mail report. Eight people were killed, six of them children. The charge carries up to life in prison.

Acting U.S. Attorney Neil Floyd and FBI Special Agent in Charge Mike Herrington announced the case. Authorities allege the shooter was aided by a conspirator in Washington state, the Globe reports, and the paper says the next court date is Oct. 13 in Seattle. Bryant is presumed innocent.

Fort Hood: Army Sets Dec. 3 Firing-Squad Execution

Acting Army Secretary Adam Telle said Tuesday that Nidal Malik Hasan will be executed by firing squad at Fort Hood, Texas, on Thursday, Dec. 3, at 1 p.m. Central time, Stars and Stripes and Military Times report. A memo Telle shared said President Trump approved the execution order on Oct. 2, Military Times says. This case continues from The Crime Ledger: October 6, 2026.

Hasan, then an Army psychiatrist, killed 13 people at a Fort Hood readiness center on Nov. 5, 2009, and was convicted at a 2013 court-martial. If carried out, it would be the first execution by the U.S. military since 1961 and the Army’s first by firing squad since 1945. It remains unclear whether he will seek to delay it through new federal appeals, Stars and Stripes says.

Auckland: Crown Abandons Tamihere Retrial

David Tamihere will not be retried over the 1989 murders of Swedish backpackers Heidi Paakkonen and her partner, the Crown told the High Court at Auckland on Wednesday, RNZ and 1News report. The Supreme Court quashed his convictions earlier this year and left the decision on a retrial to Crown prosecutors. Tamihere had served 20 years in prison. A retrial would have relied largely on disputed identification evidence placing him and a woman resembling Paakkonen on the Coromandel Peninsula, RNZ reports.
