Sri Lanka’s High Court convicted fifteen of twenty-four defendants over the 2019 Easter Sunday bombings, with sentences following the same day. Colombo: Fifteen Guilty in Easter Sunday Bombings
Sri Lanka’s High Court convicted fifteen of twenty-four men Tuesday over the April 2019 Easter Sunday bombings of three churches and three luxury hotels. Al Jazeera, citing AFP and AP, put the toll at 279 dead, including forty-five foreigners, and more than five hundred injured; The Guardian reports 267 dead.
A three-judge bench found fourteen defendants guilty on all counts, including murder, conspiracy, and firearms and explosives charges under the Prevention of Terrorism Act; a fifteenth was convicted on some counts, and nine were acquitted. One of the original twenty-five charged had died in custody. Prosecutors identified Mohamed Naufar, convicted on all charges, as the ringleader who backed the eight-member attack squad. Sentences followed later Tuesday. Catholic priest Jude Fernando told AFP, “Finally, we have justice.” All convicted defendants retain appeal rights; the acquitted leave without those convictions.

Valley Heights: Mother Charged Over Child Stabbings
NSW Police charged a 42-year-old woman Tuesday with domestic-violence murder and two counts of domestic-violence wounding or grievous bodily harm with intent to murder after Sunday’s stabbing of three children found with her in a car on Waratah Road, Valley Heights.
Bystanders called Triple Zero about 12:45 p.m. Sunday. The five-year-old boy was dead at the scene; the one- and three-year-olds were critical but stable at Westmead Children’s Hospital. Police allege the woman’s wounds were self-inflicted. She was charged at a bedside hearing at Westmead Hospital, refused bail, and listed for Penrith Local Court on November 20. Police say they are not looking for anyone else. She is presumed innocent.
Update, Sept. 24: NSW Police said the one-year-old died in hospital Thursday and the mother now faces an additional murder charge; the full development is on The Crime Ledger: September 24, 2026.

Kansas City: Jury Convicts Scott in Four Indian Creek Killings
A Jackson County jury on Tuesday found Fredrick Scott, 31, guilty of four counts of first-degree murder and armed criminal action in killings along south Kansas City’s Indian Creek Trail system between 2016 and 2017 — and not guilty on two other first-degree murder counts.
The victims named in the case were John Palmer, Mike Darby, Karen Harmeyer, Steven Gibbons, David Lenox, and Timothy Rice; the panel acquitted Scott in the Lenox and Rice deaths. Prosecutor Melesa Johnson said families waited nine years. Jurors later recommended life without parole on each murder conviction and fifteen years on each armed-criminal-action count. The judge sets final sentence Nov. 23. Scott retains appeal rights.

Belleville: Synagogue Suspect Dies in Hospital
Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit confirmed Tuesday that Sean Ward, 29, of Quinte West — the man the SIU says opened fire with a shotgun on Const. Jeff Smith outside Sons of Jacob Synagogue at the start of Yom Kippur — died in hospital Monday night of injuries sustained in Sunday’s exchange of gunfire.
SIU spokesperson Kristy Denette said an autopsy was set for Wednesday in Kingston. InQuinte reported Smith in serious but stable condition in intensive care Tuesday and expected to recover. National Post reported Ward was a former Canadian Armed Forces corporal, released in 2022. Synagogue president Norm Weddum called Smith a hero. Ward was not charged before his death. Motive, and whether the synagogue was the intended target, remained under investigation Tuesday.

Irondequoit: Brothers Convicted in Family-of-Four Killings
Dual Monroe County juries on Tuesday convicted Julio Cesar Pimentel-Soriano, 36, and Luis Francisco Soriano, 33, of murder, arson, kidnapping, and burglary in the Aug. 31, 2024, deaths of Fraime Ubaldo, Marangely Moreno-Santiago, and the couple’s two young children at a Knapp Avenue home in Irondequoit, N.Y.
Prosecutors said a dispute over missing drugs led the brothers to fatally stab their cousin and his family, then set eight fires; they argued surveillance video showed the brothers entering with zip ties and duct tape and leaving after the fire. Sentencing is set for Nov. 16 (Luis) and Nov. 23 (Julio). Both retain appeal rights.

Mount Dora: Williams Guilty in Senior Couple Stabbings
A Lake County jury on Tuesday convicted Vickie Williams of two counts of first-degree murder and grand theft in the December 2022 stabbing deaths of Sharon Getman, 80, and Darryl Getman, 83, inside their Waterman Village home in Mount Dora, Fla.
Jurors deliberated about thirty minutes. The defense did not dispute that Williams killed the Getmans but argued a psychotic episode; prosecutors pointed to three knives, a bathroom cleanup, and the theft of jewelry and the couple’s car. State Attorney Bill Gladson’s office is seeking death; the penalty phase was set for Thursday, with the judge deciding the final sentence.
Update, Sept. 24: The penalty phase opened Thursday; Spectrum News 13 reported jurors had not reached a recommendation by evening and were due back Friday.

Derby: Murder and Five Manslaughter Verdicts in Ambush
A Derby Crown Court jury sitting at Loughborough Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday convicted Jayden Mannion-Roberts, 26, of murdering Dale Martin, 21, and convicted five other Derby men of manslaughter after a June 15, 2025, balaclava ambush on Oaklands Avenue and Stenson Road.
Prosecutors said the group blocked Martin’s car with electric bikes and attacked him with swords, machetes, and knives after he tripped. Manslaughter convictions went to Ki Grant-Finlayson, 23; Keenan Hamblett, 27; Shaylon McCalla, 27; Kayin Holmes, 25; and Kelci Thompson, 19. A defendant who was seventeen at trial and three others charged with assisting an offender were acquitted. Sentencing is Oct. 1. All convicted defendants retain appeal rights.

Valletta: AG Appeals Fenech Acquittal in Daphne Murder
Malta’s attorney general on Tuesday filed an appeal of the jury verdict that cleared businessman Yorgen Fenech of complicity and criminal association in the 2017 car-bomb murder of investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.
Fenech was acquitted earlier in September by an 8–1 verdict after a two-month trial; men who planted and produced the bomb are already serving long terms. Reuters noted appeals in jury cases are limited to points of law and that the Court of Criminal Appeal can order a retrial. Malta police last week questioned three jurors, a reserve juror, and a juror’s husband over alleged sequestration breaches; none has been charged. Fenech has denied the accusations and remains presumed innocent.

Cha-am: Aem Cyanide Draws Fifth Death Sentence
Bangkok’s Criminal Court on Tuesday sentenced Sararat Rangsiwuthaporn, 39 — known as Aem Cyanide — to death for the Aug. 15, 2022, cyanide poisoning of creditor Chantararat Wongkraisin, 43, at a petrol-station food stall in Cha-am, Phetchaburi province.
Judges found the killing premeditated to erase a debt of more than 90,000 baht. It is Sararat’s fifth death sentence; two earlier ones were commuted to life, and she has been acquitted in three other murders. Police have linked her to fourteen deaths from 2015 to 2023. She is presumed innocent in unresolved cases.

Bengaluru: 2,085-Page Chargesheet in Triple Murder
KR Puram police on Tuesday filed a 2,085-page chargesheet against S. Shwetha, 24, and her live-in partner Kenneth, 26, in the June 22, 2026, stabbing and hacking deaths of Shwetha’s parents, Somasundar, 55, and Muthulakshmi, 48, and her sister Supriya, 20, inside Sai Green Apartment in Seegehalli.
Charges run under BNS sections covering murder, conspiracy, and related counts. Shwetha was arrested near Puducherry within a day; Kenneth followed. Police say a supplementary chargesheet may follow. Both accused are presumed innocent.

Fortaleza: Boyfriend Arrested After Student Found Dead
Ceará Civil Police on Tuesday ordered the preventive detention of João Munhoz Neto, 34, boyfriend of Isabelle Caracristi, 22, whose body was found Sept. 13 in the courtyard of the La Piazza condominium in Fortaleza’s Aldeota neighborhood.
The autopsy report cited polytrauma consistent with impact against the ground; toxicology was negative. Condo cameras, per SSPDS-CE and local reporting, place Isabelle alone on an elevator toward the 23rd floor after Munhoz and his mother had left; he returned after the estimated time of death. His lawyer, Lígia Peixe, says he denies any crime and that a fall or suicide remains possible. He is presumed innocent.

San Jose: Man Flags Patrol, Two Bodies by Guadalupe River
San Jose Police booked Marcelino Castro, 28, on two counts of murder after he allegedly flagged down a patrol officer about 5:15 p.m. Saturday near Lelong Street and West Alma Avenue, said he had killed someone, and later directed officers to a second body near Autumn Parkway and Coleman Avenue — both sites by the Guadalupe River.
SJPD’s Tuesday release counts the deaths as the city’s twentieth and twenty-first homicides of 2026. The victims have not been publicly identified; motive and circumstances are under investigation. Castro is held in Santa Clara County Jail and is presumed innocent.

Binghamton: Mitchell Guilty of Double Strangulation Murder
A Broome County jury on Tuesday found Scott Mitchell, 51, of Binghamton guilty on all counts in the Feb. 3, 2025, killings of Daniel McCloe, 58, and Marshall VanOven, 55, at a Westwood Court home.
Counts included first- and second-degree murder, strangulation, concealment of human bodies, and evidence tampering. Testimony described rope strangulation and wrench blows; the bodies were later found stripped in garage trash cans. Mitchell fled to Florida and was arrested Feb. 12 by the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office. Sentencing is Dec. 17; he faces life. He retains appeal rights.

Solihull: Murder Charge After Father of Six Dies
West Midlands Police charged Kevin Johnson, 38, of Birmingham, with murder after Stuart Nash died following a Saturday evening incident on Shustoke Road in Solihull.
Johnson appeared before magistrates in Coventry on Tuesday and was due at Birmingham Crown Court on Sept. 24. Nash’s family called him a devoted father of six. A 35-year-old woman arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender was released on bail. Johnson is presumed innocent.

Frederick: 87-Year-Old Charged in Roommate’s Death
City of Frederick police charged Irwin Joseph Dickstein, 87, with first- and second-degree murder in the death of his roommate, Michael Roy Bushnell, 63, whose body was found Sunday at their Franklin Street home. Court records reviewed by WTOP on Tuesday show Dickstein held without bond and ordered to undergo a competency evaluation.
Charging documents cited by The Frederick News-Post say a church associate pastor called a sheriff’s deputy after a congregant said he had killed someone; Dickstein allegedly gave the deputy the address and told the man who drove him to church that he had shot Bushnell. A warrant search of the car’s trunk turned up a Beretta handgun case containing a weapon. A neighbor reported loud bangs about 5:30 a.m. Sunday. A competency hearing is set for Oct. 13, with a preliminary hearing Oct. 21. Dickstein is presumed innocent.

Burlington: Eaton Guilty in Palestinian Students Shooting
A Chittenden Superior Court jury on Monday convicted Jason J. Eaton, 51, of three counts of attempted second-degree murder for the Nov. 25, 2023, shooting of Palestinian college students Hisham Awartani, Tahseen Aliahmad, and Kinnan Abdalhamid while they walked in a Burlington neighborhood.
Awartani was hit in the thumb and chest and left paralyzed; Aliahmad was shot in the chest; Abdalhamid was shot while running. Jurors deliberated about two hours and rejected Eaton’s insanity defense. He faces up to life without parole, prosecutors say; sentencing is pending. No hate-crime counts were filed. Eaton retains appeal rights.

Harris County: Capital Murder Charge After Girl Shot in Car
Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez announced that Jeremy Porter, 47, is charged with capital murder after five-year-old Zah’Layah Walter was shot and killed Saturday night while her mother, Monica Hicks, drove with five children near Grant and Jones roads in northwest Harris County.
Other children were hurt by glass, none with life-threatening injuries. Motive remains under investigation. Hicks told ABC13 she was not in a road-rage exchange. Court records cited by ABC13 say Porter admitted firing five shots at the car, telling investigators he believed it had shot at him first. Porter was scheduled for a preliminary court appearance Tuesday and is presumed innocent.

Niagara Falls: One Arrest in Lundy’s Lane Murder
Niagara Regional Police arrested Alexander Piccirillo, 46, in Niagara Falls on Tuesday, one of two men wanted on second-degree murder charges after Matthew McAra, 37, died Monday of injuries from a Thursday evening assault outside a business on Lundy’s Lane near Hanan Avenue. Piccirillo was scheduled for a bail hearing in St. Catharines on Wednesday; Brandon Fitzgerald, 31, remains at large.
Officers found McAra without vital signs shortly before 6:30 p.m. Thursday; paramedics revived him enough for hospital transport. Detectives say two men fled; the homicide unit took over after his death. Police call the attack targeted and warn the public not to approach Fitzgerald. Both men are presumed innocent.

Glasgow: Life Sentence for Brodie MacGregor Murder
Alexander Brennan, 54, was found guilty Monday at the High Court in Glasgow of murdering Brodie MacGregor, 23, whose body was found Aug. 26, 2024, at her Elmvale Street home in Springburn — and sentenced to life with a minimum term of twenty-two years.
Detective Superintendent Lynsey Watters said the Springburn community helped the investigation and that violence against women and girls remains a Police Scotland priority. Brennan retains appeal rights.

Stony Brook: 25 Years for Yacht Club Manslaughter
A Suffolk County judge on Tuesday sentenced Victor Panebianco, 33, of King, N.C., to twenty-five years in prison plus five years’ post-release supervision after his Aug. 11 guilty plea to first-degree manslaughter in the Nov. 10, 2025, stabbing death of Christopher Millwater, 52, of Selden, in the Stony Brook Yacht Club parking lot.
District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney said the court imposed the maximum his office requested. Prosecutors say co-defendant Kacy Corso crashed her car into Millwater’s as he tried to drive away; surveillance video showed Panebianco chasing him with a knife, and Millwater died of two stab wounds to the chest. Corso, who pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter in July, was expected to be sentenced Wednesday to seven years.
Update, Sept. 23: Corso was sentenced Wednesday to seven years, the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office said, per Patch.
