Daily Breaking True Crime Briefing As of: October 6, 2026 (late afternoon ET) Scope: Tuesday’s board covers cases reported from late morning Monday, Oct. 5, through late morning Tuesday, Oct. 6, ET, with custody and charge status checked as sources opened today. The stories come from police, court and prosecutor statements, wire services and local newsrooms in the United States, Kenya, Italy, South Africa, Hong Kong, Mexico, England, Australia, Russia, Chile, Canada, France, Singapore, Argentina, Scotland, Türkiye, Paraguay, South Korea, Wales, the Netherlands, Malaysia, Honduras, Germany, Egypt, Pakistan, Spain, the Philippines, Estonia, Nigeria and Brazil. The Pentagon says President Trump has approved a firing-squad execution for the Army psychiatrist who killed 13 people at Fort Hood in 2009, which would be the U.S. military’s first execution since 1961. In Nairobi, seven people accused of killing psychiatrist Victoria Mutiso pleaded not guilty to a fresh, consolidated charge as the State moved to keep them all in custody. Turin police arrested a widow and her new partner over a man found dead in July, and an Ohio judge sent a former “American Idol” contestant to prison for life. Courts handed down life terms in Kowloon Bay, Edinburgh, Dolores, Wichita and La Spezia, and New Hampshire’s top court left the state’s last death sentence in place. Fresh custody orders and charges also landed in Coatzacoalcos, Moscow, Los Ángeles, Amsterdam, Hamburg, Giza, Almadén, Pärnu, Karachi and more than two dozen other places, while six carried cases each took a new step. Fort Hood: Trump Approves Firing Squad for Hasan The Warrior Transition Brigade campus at Fort Hood, Texas. Photo: Gloria Montgomery / Wikimedia Commons, Public domain Chief Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said Monday that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth recommended an Army firing squad for Nidal Malik Hasan and President Trump approved it, Stars and Stripes and CBS News report. “The Secretary of the Army will set the time and place of the execution,” Parnell said. Hasan, then an Army psychiatrist, opened fire at a soldier readiness center at Fort Hood, Texas, on Nov. 5, 2009, killing 13 people. A 2013 court-martial convicted him of 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder, and he was sentenced to death. Hasan has been held on military death row at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and the Supreme Court declined to review his case last year, Stars and Stripes says. If carried out, it would be the first execution by the U.S. military since 1961 and the Army’s first by firing squad since World War II. It is unclear whether he will mount new challenges in federal court. Update, Oct. 7: Acting Army Secretary Adam Telle said Tuesday that the firing-squad execution of Nidal Malik Hasan will take place at Fort Hood, Texas, on Thursday, Dec. 3, at 1 p.m. Central time. The fresh plea came after Police Constable Collins Bett Kiplangat and Pius Muiru Mbugua, alias Headboy, were brought before the court, joining Rose Mbithe Mulwa, her children Chris and Angela Mulwa, Police Constable Elijah Kibelion Kimoi and Maritim Kimutai. This case continues from The Crime Ledger: October 1, 2026. State counsel Jalson Makori opposed bail for all seven, citing a risk of witness interference. Justice Muteti is set to rule on bail on Oct. 9 at 10 a.m., The Star reports. The charge sheet says Dr Mutiso was killed at about 9:30 a.m. on July 29 on Mawensi Road in Kilimani. In an affidavit reported by Citizen Digital, her husband, David Ndetei, asked the court to keep the accused in custody and said he and his wife had been threatened before her death. This case continues from The Crime Ledger: October 5, 2026. The separated counts relate to a May 2022 shooting that IOL places on Jan Smuts Highway in Mayville. The State, led by KwaZulu-Natal Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions Lawrence Gcaba, opposed the split, and investigating officer Kumarasan Pillay said in an affidavit that the same firearm was used in both shootings. Forbes and Motsoane were shot on Florida Road in February 2023. All seven accused have pleaded not guilty and are presumed innocent. Update, Oct. 7: The State called its first witness on Wednesday, and the court reversed an earlier ruling that had barred the media from reporting witness evidence. Photo: Billy Yellow / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 3.0 A High Court jury of four women and three men in Hong Kong unanimously found renovation worker Tam Yun-chiu, 52, guilty on Tuesday of murdering bus driver Ho Lok-man, 48, and Mrs Justice Judianna Barnes Wai-ling imposed life imprisonment, the only sentence the law allows for murder, the South China Morning Post and Dimsum Daily report. The jury deliberated for more than four hours. Tam had denied murder. Prosecutors said that at about 11 p.m. on Sept. 19, 2023, Tam stood holding a cigarette while waiting for a lift at Amoy Gardens in Kowloon Bay. Ho, beside him, waved his hand and complained about the smoke. Tam glared at him inside the lift, then followed him out onto the estate podium, where security cameras recorded him pushing Ho against a railing, punching him repeatedly in the face until he fell, then walking back and kicking his head more than once before leaving. Ho called police himself. Paramedics found abrasions to his face and lips and a cut to his left elbow; he was treated at United Christian Hospital and sent home the next day. At home he began vomiting and lost consciousness. At Queen Elizabeth Hospital, neurosurgeons removed part of his skull to relieve pressure on the brain, but he died on Oct. 1, 12 days after the assault. An autopsy gave the cause as head injury. Passing sentence, the judge called the case tragic and said Tam came from a good background but had nevertheless committed murder. Photo: SayCheeeeeese / Wikimedia Commons, Public domain New Hampshire’s Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed a petition from Michael Addison, the state’s only death row prisoner, seeking a fresh review of his sentence, the Concord Monitor and NHPR report. Addison, now 46, shot and killed Manchester police officer Michael Briggs in 2006 and was convicted of capital murder and sentenced to death in 2008. In Petition of Addison, 2026 N.H. 37, argued March 26 and decided Oct. 6, the court considered whether Addison was entitled to a second comparative proportionality review under RSA 630:5, X and XI, the step that checks whether a death sentence is excessive compared with similar cases. The court had already done that review in 2015 and found the sentence “neither excessive nor disproportionate.” New Hampshire repealed the death penalty on May 30, 2019 (Laws 2019, ch. 42), but the repeal applies only to people convicted on or after that date; at the time, Addison was the only person it left on death row. His lawyers argued that an execution would conflict with current law and with evolving “standards of decency.” Writing for the court, Justice Melissa Countway held that the statute allows only one such review: “If the legislature intended to provide successive comparative proportionality reviews for defendants convicted of capital murder and sentenced to death prior to the effective date of the act repealing the death penalty, it could have included that in the legislation, but it did not.” Justices Patrick Donovan and Brian Gould concurred. Defense attorney Jonathan Cohen said the team was “disappointed in the Court’s decision.” A habeas corpus challenge Addison filed in superior court in 2016 is separate from this ruling. New Hampshire has not carried out an execution since 1939. Photo: panza.rayada / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 3.0 Five people have been ordered to stand trial and will stay in prison over the Sept. 23 shooting death of Guillermo Pamucé Yep in the Veleros subdivision of Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz’s state prosecutor’s office (FGE) said on Friday, Oct. 9, N+ and Impacto del Sur report. Pamucé, a former Jáltipan councilman, was the regional coordinator of the new PAZ party. At a continued hearing at the Centro Integral de Justicia, a control judge issued a vinculación a proceso against Kleverly Heinz “N,” Suhey del Carmen “N,” Karla Itzel “N,” Juan Carlos “N” and Jorge Alberto “N” for aggravated intentional homicide, under criminal case 540/2026, and confirmed mandatory pretrial detention. Prosecutors allege the five acted in coordination, with roles ranging from planning and surveillance to the shooting itself. They identify Suhey del Carmen “N,” alias “La Princess,” as the person who fired the gun. Relatives of the accused disputed the allegations, but the judge found enough evidence to proceed, Impacto del Sur reports. The judge set a period for further investigation. Mexican authorities withhold full surnames of the accused. A vinculación a proceso is not a conviction. All five are presumed innocent. Photo: Adrian S Pye / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 2.0 Norfolk Police said Tuesday that Mark Cain, 45, of Fern Hill, Dersingham, has been charged with the murder of Hannah Cain, a 45-year-old GP known professionally as Dr Hannah Terry, BBC News and The Independent report. Her body was found at a property on Fern Hill early Sunday, and he was arrested on suspicion of murder. This case continues from The Crime Ledger: October 5, 2026. The charge came after magistrates in Great Yarmouth granted detectives a 32-hour warrant of further detention on Monday, Lynn News and the Eastern Daily Press reported. Cain has been remanded in custody to appear at Norwich Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday. “The Crown Prosecution Service has decided to prosecute Mark Cain for the murder of Hannah Cain following a police investigation into an incident at her home in Dersingham,” Michael Devaney of the CPS said, according to BBC News. Police say her family has asked for privacy. Cain is presumed innocent. Photo: Sardaka / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0 Former Special Air Service Regiment private Oliver Schulz will rely on “the defence of superior orders” at his trial on a single count of the war crime of murder, his barrister, Murugan Thangaraj SC, told New South Wales Supreme Court Justice Peter Hamill on Tuesday, The Nightly reports. Schulz is charged over the 2012 shooting of an Afghan man, Dad Mohammad, in a wheat field in Uruzgan province, a killing captured on helmet-camera video and broadcast on television. He has pleaded not guilty and is the first Australian soldier prosecuted for a war crime in a civilian court, under laws passed in 2002 to align with the International Criminal Court. The defence dates to the Nuremberg and Tokyo trials after World War II. The Nightly reports that his lawyers can refer to the Joint Prioritised Effects List, a secret targeting list that authorised Australian forces to kill listed insurgents without trying to capture them; a successful argument could make it harder to convict other veterans accused of killing prisoners. Prosecutors, led by Sean Flood, are expected to argue that soldiers were told not to harm people who no longer posed a threat. Thangaraj gave no details of the evidence to come. Justice Hamill allowed the defence to be reported after Nine’s lawyer argued that suppressing it would be against open justice. National security reviews of the evidence have pushed the trial to 2027. Schulz is presumed innocent. Photo: Joperd / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY 2.0 Matome Victor Rampedi, 36, accused of murdering Ntombifuthi Nxumalo, 49, appeared in the Tembisa Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, where his bail application was postponed to Oct. 19 after his lawyer asked for more time to consult, EWN and the National Prosecuting Authority report. NPA Gauteng spokesperson Magaboke Mohlatlole said the State was ready to proceed and will oppose bail. Rampedi, charged with murder, remains in custody. This case continues from The Crime Ledger: September 30, 2026. According to the NPA, Nxumalo’s naked body was found on Sept. 26 in the Vusimusi section of Mooifontein Cemetery with serious head injuries, and the State alleges she was beaten to death. She had been drinking at a local tavern with a female friend and left with Rampedi, prosecutors say, and residents near the cemetery reported hearing a woman screaming and pleading for her life that night. Police traced him to an address in Tembisa, found he had fled, and arrested him in Mohlabaneng Village, Limpopo, outside Tzaneen. Her family travelled from Nongoma in KwaZulu-Natal for the hearing. A relative told reporters the family felt the process was favouring the accused’s rights over theirs, and that they want justice, The Citizen reports. Her brother, Linda Nxumalo, told SABC: “When they talked about women who were getting killed, ours became the tenth.” President Cyril Ramaphosa has cited a string of women’s bodies found in Ekurhuleni since July; police have not linked Rampedi to the others. He is presumed innocent. A third man, Devondre Hall, 25, is wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for first-degree murder, police said in a release Monday. Officers responding to a fire in a field near Steeles Avenue East and Reesor Road on Sept. 21 found Charles inside a burning vehicle, police said. CBC News reports he was from Scarborough. Powell and Jeffrey were scheduled to appear at the Toronto Regional Bail Centre on Monday. All three are presumed innocent. Toronto police found a second body in a burning car less than two hours later that night, near Royal York Road and Edenbridge Drive in Etobicoke, and identified him as Mohamud Kheyre, 30, CityNews and CBC report. Police have not linked Powell, Jeffrey or Hall to that death. The other three are an 18-year-old man and two 22-year-old brothers. This case continues from The Crime Ledger: October 5, 2026. Prosecutor Daniel Espilocín of the unit for serious attacks on people now leads the case, taking over from prosecutor María Luján Sodero Calvet, Gente de Salta reports. At hearings Tuesday, the three men were charged with homicide and Judge Pablo Farah ordered them held in pretrial detention, the Public Prosecutor’s Office said. The woman was charged with aggravated concealment, accused of helping hide the knife, and Judge Eduardo Sángari placed her under house arrest. Velarde was attacked Saturday night on Matienzo Street in the city’s north. The prosecutor’s office gives Velarde’s age as 33. None of the four accused has been named, and all are presumed innocent. Photo: LornaMCampbell / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0 Terence Welsh, 42, was jailed for life on Tuesday at the High Court in Edinburgh for the murder of Stuart Kennedy, 59, and ordered to serve at least 19 years before he can be considered for parole, BBC News and the Ardrossan Herald report. A jury at the High Court in Glasgow convicted him last month. He had denied murder and claimed self-defense. The jury cleared him of attempting to murder another woman in the flat, who said he had thrown her from a window. Welsh stabbed Kennedy in the chest as he sat in a chair in his flat on Montgomerie Street, Ardrossan, on Sept. 10, 2024. The two men had been in the flat with Kennedy’s daughter and another woman when a row broke out. The daughter left; when she came back, Welsh told her: “Your dad is dead. I have murdered him.” A neighbor told the trial that Welsh came out looking “like a mad man”: “His eyes were bulging. He was flicking the knife over in his hand between his fingers.” Lord Cubie told him: “You stabbed the complainer when he was seated and not armed. Mr Kennedy leaves behind family. His death was a tragic consequence of your own self-absorption.” Defense counsel Graeme Brown KC said Welsh had struggled with drug addiction all his life and had “not done enough to address that particular issue.” Sources: BBC News: Drug addict who murdered man in his own home jailed for life Police Scotland: Terence Welsh given life sentence for murder of Stuart Kennedy Ardrossan Herald: Killer handed life sentence after ‘brutal’ murder of man at Ardrossan flat Diyarbakır: Father Jailed in 2007 Cold Case The city walls of Diyarbakır, Türkiye. Ali Kurt was one of six people detained on Oct. 2 in raids in Diyarbakır and Batman; two others were placed under house arrest and three were released under judicial control. Erhan Kurt was found dead on Sept. 21, 2007, on a track near the Tigris River in the Sur district. An autopsy found he had been strangled with a ligature. Prosecutors shelved the file in 2013 for lack of evidence. According to Aydınlık and Haberler, the reopened inquiry rests on phone traffic (HTS) records, contradictions in witness statements, and the similarity between the cable used to strangle him and the material Ali Kurt used in his electrical work. Investigators have not publicly stated a motive. Ali Kurt is presumed innocent. The court was still choosing alternate jurors on Tuesday, and opening statements cannot begin until those seats are filled, ABC11 says. Hedgepeth was found dead in her apartment by her roommate in September 2012. Salguero-Olivares was arrested in 2021, WRAL reports. The Durham County district attorney had told ABC11 that proceedings were likely to get underway Wednesday. He is presumed innocent. Update, Oct. 8: Opening statements were heard Wednesday in the trial of Miguel Salguero-Olivares, charged with the 2012 murder of Faith Hedgepeth. He is presumed innocent. See The Crime Ledger: October 8, 2026. Update, Oct. 11, 2026: Testimony continued through Oct. 9. Dr. Lauren Scott, the associate chief medical examiner who performed the autopsy on Sept. 8, 2012, testified that Hedgepeth suffered “multiple lacerations on scalp, forehead and face” and bleeding around and in the brain, and died of blunt force trauma to the head; several jurors cried and the judge called a break, ABC11 reports. Prosecutors say his DNA matched male DNA on her body and on a liquor bottle believed to be the weapon. He is charged with first-degree murder, first-degree rape, first-degree sexual offense and first-degree burglary, and has pleaded not guilty. The trial resumes Oct. 12 and is expected to last three to six weeks. Police allege he strangled the victim at the older man’s home in Beon-dong, Gangbuk-gu, at about 11 p.m. on Oct. 3. The suspect reportedly told police he went to confront the man after their shoulders bumped on the street, but police found no such moment on CCTV along the victim’s route home, KBS says. Police plan a psychopathy assessment. The suspect is presumed innocent. Update, Oct. 11, 2026: The Seoul Northern District Court issued the arrest warrant on Oct. 7 on charges of murder and theft, Yonhap and Hankook Ilbo report. The suspect, surnamed Oh, was arrested in Mia-dong at about 1 a.m. on Oct. 5. Police say he took the victim’s phone and wandered around Gangnam with it switched on. A friend of the victim asked police on the morning of Oct. 4 to trace him; the phone signal led officers to Gangnam, and they found the body that afternoon after forcing their way into his home in a multi-family house. Georgie Mears, 19, Connor Palfrey, 24, Ricardo Elliot, 27, and Elexi Manny, 24, all deny murder on a joint enterprise basis. Prosecutors say the attack at a house on Lower Francis Street, where Tristan had been playing Fortnite, lasted about two minutes. They allege Mears stabbed him with a large “zombie”-style knife while Palfrey held a wooden stick and warned others not to intervene. Tristan bled to death, collapsing in the arms of a friend, the court heard. His grandfather told the jury about his last words, which drew cries from the public gallery, WalesOnline reports. Prosecutors said the motive is unclear, but that text messages showed Palfrey and Elliot discussing drug dealing and collecting drug debts. The trial is expected to last four to six weeks. Kuantan police chief Ashari Abu Samah said the man called police himself at 4:32 a.m. Tuesday after a dispute, and officers arrested him at the scene, a rented room on Jalan Air Putih 2. She was found unconscious and pronounced dead. “We found strangulation marks on her,” Ashari said. A post-mortem was carried out at Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital. Police said early inquiries pointed to a misunderstanding between the couple, and the New Straits Times later reported that jealousy is believed to be the motive. Police have named the woman as Samantha Natalie Phythian, 35, of Rhyl, known to her family as Sammi, and confirmed she was pregnant. Judge Geraint Walters told the court: “At the time of ignition the person was alive.
