Daily Breaking True Crime Briefing As of: October 19, 2026 (5:45 p.m. ET) Scope: Monday’s board covers cases reported from Sunday, Oct. 18, through Monday evening, Oct. 19, ET, from police, court and prosecutor statements and newsrooms in North America, Europe, Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, Asia and Oceania. A Kenyan judge has convicted Shakahola cult leader Paul Mackenzie and his co-accused of murdering 190 children and one adult, rejecting the claim that the victims chose to starve, with sentencing set for Nov. 6. In Miami, a judge signed a Florida murder warrant for former Cuban leader Raúl Castro over the 1996 shootdown of two Brothers to the Rescue planes, a state case running alongside the federal indictment returned in May. In Australia, independent MP Helen Haines was critically injured when an SUV hit her outside her Wangaratta office, and the prime minister said it appeared to be deliberate. Police in Kota pulled three men off a train over shots fired at actor Tiger Shroff’s car in Mumbai, and a Sacramento man who said immigration agents had taken his wife was charged with her murder. In Sydney, a man was remanded after allegedly telling an AI chatbot he would shoot children at a childcare centre. The rest of the board runs from the beheading of an exiled Rwandan critic in Uganda and a trial over the Marseille drug war killings to a woman caught in Vietnam 43 years after escaping a life sentence and a Hamburg cold case made final. Mombasa, Kenya: Shakahola Cult Leader Paul Mackenzie Convicted of 191 Murders Malindi, the coastal town near the Shakahola forest in Kilifi County. Place photo. Photo: Mtl1969 / Wikimedia Commons, public domain Justice Diana Kavedza found self-styled preacher Paul Nthenge Mackenzie and his co-accused guilty on Monday of murdering 190 children and one adult in the Shakahola forest starvation deaths, DW and Kenyans.co.ke reported. The ruling at the Mombasa High Court took more than eight hours to read. “I am satisfied that the prosecution has proved the case,” the judge said, convicting the accused under Section 203 of Kenya’s Penal Code. Sentencing is set for Nov. 6. The court rejected the defense’s claim that the victims chose to fast to death, TRT World reported. The Daily Nation reported that the judge found the accused acted jointly to enforce the fasting regime, and that the deaths came from the unlawful acts and omissions of those who ran and sustained it, not from the unintended results of religious practice. Kavedza ruled that Mackenzie’s Good News International Church “met all the characteristics of an apocalyptic or doomsday cult,” Kenyans.co.ke reported. Most of the victims starved. Prosecutors told the court others died of asphyxia, neck compression and traumatic head injury, and that some children were isolated and denied food while their parents watched, DW reported. The judge also ruled that the exhumations stood even though no forensic archaeologist had been on the team, according to Kenyans.co.ke, which said probation reports are due Oct. 30 and the sentencing hearing opens Nov. 2. Mackenzie was arrested in April 2023, and police went on to find more than 400 bodies in shallow graves near Malindi. DW reported he had been arrested in 2017 and 2019 and released both times, and was charged in January over 52 more bodies found at a nearby village. “This is a very, very important day,” Francis Wanje, 62, who lost eight relatives at Shakahola, including his daughter and two grandchildren, told AFP before the ruling. He was Cuba’s defense minister when the planes were shot down in 1996. Photo: Government.ru / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY 4.0 A Miami-Dade circuit judge has signed a Florida arrest warrant for former Cuban leader Raúl Castro, 95, accusing him of conspiracy to commit first-degree murder in the 1996 shootdown of two Brothers to the Rescue planes, Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier announced at Florida International University’s law school on Monday, CBS News Miami and WPLG reported. NBC6 reported that the warrant was signed by Judge Ariana Fajardo Orshan of the Eleventh Judicial Circuit. Cuban military jets shot down the two unarmed Cessna 337s over international waters on Feb. 24, 1996, killing Carlos Costa, 29, Armando Alejandre Jr., 45, Mario de la Peña, 24, and Pablo Morales, 29. Three were U.S. citizens and one was a legal resident. The Miami-based exile group flew to spot rafters fleeing Cuba. “It was not an accident what happened, it was murder,” Uthmeier said. CBS News Miami reported that the court papers say Cuban spies passed flight data and watched the Naval Air Station in Key West, and that the affidavit argues this is enough probable cause to place the conspiracy in Florida. Castro was Cuba’s defense minister at the time. He already faces a federal indictment returned on May 20, which charges him and five pilots with four counts of murder, two counts of destroying aircraft and conspiracy to kill U.S. nationals. U.S. Attorney Jason A. Reding Quiñones stood beside Uthmeier and called the state case a “parallel” prosecution. Castro lives in Cuba, which does not extradite to the United States, and has never answered either case. He is presumed innocent. Photo: Alison Newman / Wikimedia Commons, CC0 Independent federal MP Helen Haines, 65, was critically injured on Monday afternoon when a white Toyota Land Cruiser hit her outside her electorate office on Murphy Street in Wangaratta, northeast of Melbourne, NPR and Anadolu’s A News reported. Victoria Police said the 65-year-old woman was struck at about 3:35 p.m. and taken to hospital with critical injuries. A passerby detained the 43-year-old driver, a man from Tarrawingee, and police arrested him at the scene. “A knife was located by police and seized from inside the Toyota,” police said, adding that they were investigating whether it was an intentional act and did not yet know whether the two knew each other. “This wasn’t an accident. There was a deliberate act, it would appear. We don’t know what the motivation is,” Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told the ABC, and he said the national counterterrorism team was investigating. Haines has represented the Victorian seat of Indi since 2019. Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke said police recorded more than 1,000 threats against politicians in the 2025-26 financial year. The driver has not been charged and is presumed innocent. Photo: Balajijagadesh / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 3.0 Police in Kota, Rajasthan, detained three men on Monday who are accused of firing at actor Tiger Shroff’s car in Mumbai’s Juhu area on Sunday evening, pulling them off the general coach of the Pune-Jaipur Superfast Express when it stopped at 10:17 a.m., Kota Superintendent of Police Tejaswani Gautam said, The New Indian Express and Open reported. Gautam said the men planned to travel to Delhi and slip into Nepal. Mumbai Deputy Commissioner Raj Tilak Roshan said two of the men fired five to six rounds at the actor’s car. Shroff, 36, escaped largely unhurt, but his driver and a bystander were injured, The New Indian Express reported. The shooting, on a busy Sunday evening, was caught on video. Police found the motorcycle used in the attack in Andheri. No weapon was recovered, and police said the motive is not yet known. Later on Monday the three were taken to a judge’s residence in Kota, where Mumbai Police obtained a 48-hour transit remand, and after medical checks at MBS Hospital they were handed to the Mumbai team, Kota Additional Superintendent Subhash Chandra Mishra told reporters, The Times of India reported. The paper said the case was registered under Sections 109(1) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the attempted murder and common intention sections, and Sections 3 and 25 of the Arms Act. Police said one of the men had been in contact with Anil Pandit, an alleged associate of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, which claimed responsibility in an unverified social media post. Police have not said the gang ordered the shooting. The accused are presumed innocent. Photo: SeymourHolcomb / Wikimedia Commons, CC0 Five adults, three men and two women, were found shot to death in several rooms of a house on Wellington Avenue in Mundelein late Sunday, police said, the Chicago Tribune and ABC7 Chicago reported. Officers went to the house at about 11:45 p.m. for a well-being check after a relative of one of the people inside called 911, Deputy Police Chief Rick Wilfenger said. They got in through an unlocked door. Police recovered two handguns inside. The five were members of the same family or in a domestic relationship, though not all of them lived at the house, the Tribune reported. Police said they had no reports of gunshots and no history of calls to the address. Chief Tom Poynor called it “an isolated incident with no threat to the public.” Police have not said who fired the shots or whether anyone else was involved. The Lake County Coroner’s Office is withholding the names for now and scheduled autopsies for Monday, Chief Deputy Coroner Steve Newton told the Lake and McHenry County Scanner. Photo: Quintin Soloviev / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY 4.0 Gurinder Singh Gill, 28, has been arrested and booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on a murder charge in the death of his wife, Jasmine Gill, 30, a registered nurse and mother of an 8-month-old boy, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said, Hindustan Times and The Australia Today reported. He is being held without bail eligibility. Jasmine Gill was last seen at the couple’s Sacramento home on Sept. 30, and a cousin reported her missing on Oct. 4. Deputies said her husband told them Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents had taken her into custody while she was checking the mail. When detectives asked ICE, the agency said it had carried out no enforcement action at the home. Detectives learned the couple were divorcing and fighting over custody, and said his account had “several inconsistencies.” Burned human remains found in El Dorado County on Oct. 1 were later identified as hers. Detectives arrested Gill on Wednesday and searched two homes linked to him. No defense lawyer was listed in the court records. He is presumed innocent. Photo: J Bar / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0 David Lan Thackray, 29, was remanded in custody for a mental health assessment at Sutherland Local Court on Monday, charged with using a carriage service to menace, harass or offend after he allegedly told the AI chatbot Claude he planned to shoot several children at a childcare centre near his home in Hurstville, in Sydney’s south, The Sydney Morning Herald and The Straits Times reported. He was arrested on Sunday morning after Interpol flagged the conversations. A police facts sheet says he told the chatbot he would “go down to the local Westfield right now and shoot up the local daycare,” and referred to Naveed Akram, who is charged with murdering 15 people at the Chanukah by the Sea event at Bondi Beach last December, the Herald reported. Prosecutors said there would be a “catastrophic” outcome if he were released and breached bail. His lawyer, Danilo Rajkovic, said Thackray went on a “stress and frustration-induced tirade” after trying to use Claude’s voice mode to help treat an ear infection, believed he was speaking privately at home and never asked the chatbot to send threats to anyone. “There was no weight behind what he was saying,” Rajkovic said. He is presumed innocent. Photo: FrogsLegs71 / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 3.0 Five men went on trial Monday before the Bouches-du-Rhône assize court in Aix-en-Provence over the killings of Réda Khaldi, Nassim Loubani and Brahim Chabane, the older brother of anti-drug campaigner Amine Kessaci, between late December 2020 and early January 2021, 20 Minutes and BFM reported. The bodies of the three men were found burned in and around the north of Marseille. “Je reconnais rien,” one defendant said, as all denied any involvement on the first day, according to BFM. 20 Minutes named the accused as Nadjim Ahamada Mbae, Ahmed Zakaria Bensaci, Malik Kariba, Karim Harrat, known as “Le Rant,” and Amine Oualane, whom it described as a senior figure in the DZ Mafia. All are held in custody and accused of ordering or taking part in the killings. BFM said Brahim had survived two earlier attempts on his life. The court sat under heavy guard: a helicopter circled the old town, streets around the Palais Monclar were sealed and 11 hooded police officers stood in the dock, BFM reported. Amine Kessaci, 23, a Marseille deputy mayor and civil party, arrived with masked officers and his mother. “It is not about vengeance but justice, after six years of fighting,” he said. His younger brother Mehdi, 20, who had no link to the drug trade, was shot dead in Marseille in November 2025. The hearings are set to last about three weeks. The accused are presumed innocent. Photo: Аны652 / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0 Ugandan police have opened a murder investigation after the headless body of Robert Kabera, 50, a former Rwandan army sergeant major and outspoken critic of President Paul Kagame, was found on Saturday morning, Oct. 17, in Luwala village, Kammengo sub-county, Mpigi District, outside Kampala, BBC News and Nile Post reported. “We recovered the body minus the head,” police spokesman Kituuma Rusoke said on Monday, adding that relatives identified him and that the head had not been found. Investigators believe he was killed during the night of Oct. 16 or the early hours of Oct. 17. His family told the BBC he had gone to inspect a construction site about 45 kilometres outside Kampala. Kabera fled Rwanda after being accused of sexual assault, which he denied, and sought asylum in Uganda, citing political persecution. He had built a following as a musician and YouTuber, with more than 144,000 subscribers and over 800 videos, many critical of Kagame. The Rwandan government has not commented. His widow, Jeanne d’Arc Rwigema Uwizeye, told BBC Great Lakes she fears for the family’s safety. No arrest has been announced. He denies 14 counts of attempted murder and is due to stand trial next week. Passengers and staff were stabbed on the 18:25 service on Saturday, Nov. 1, after it left Peterborough, forcing an unscheduled stop at Huntingdon. Williams, who appeared by video link from Rampton Hospital in Nottinghamshire, has pleaded not guilty to attempting to murder 10 named people on the train. Before Mr Justice Calver, he also admitted affray at a barber shop in Peterborough and stealing knives from an Asda in Stevenage on Oct. 31, carrying a blade in Peterborough, at Pontoon Dock DLR station in east London and on the train, assaulting a male police officer on Nov. 2, and common assault on a Govia Thameslink train on Nov. 1, the BBC reported. Photo: hyolee2 / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 3.0 The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency on Monday released the name, age and mug shot of Kim Seong-woo, 26, also romanised Kim Sung-woo, who is accused of stabbing his mother-in-law to death and abducting his wife in Seoul’s Songpa District, Chosun Biz and Seoul Economic Daily reported. A disclosure review panel found the harm grave, the method cruel and the evidence sufficient. His details will stay on the agency’s website for 30 days. Police say Kim went to his in-laws’ home in Songpa at about 5:38 a.m. on Oct. 11, stabbed his mother-in-law, who was in her 50s, and forced his wife into a vehicle. The mother-in-law was taken to hospital in cardiac arrest and died. Police arrested Kim at about 12:35 p.m. that day on a wooded hillside in Yangyang County, Gangwon Province, where he had fled with his wife. Police are examining whether the killing was premeditated, Chosun Biz reported, because Kim allegedly waited about four hours near the home carrying a weapon. He has been arrested on charges including murder of a lineal ascendant and aggravated unlawful confinement, and police plan to send the case to prosecutors as early as Tuesday. He is presumed innocent. Her probation terms include treatment for alcohol problems and supervision of her relationship with her new partner and the care of their child. Dean had been staying with the couple in Sint-Gillis-Waas, East Flanders. He and De Kock were last seen on Jan. 12, 2022. De Kock was arrested on Jan. 17 in Meerkerk, in the Netherlands, after crossing the border, and the boy’s body was found that day off Neeltje Jans in Zeeland. Two co-defendants, Mustafa Zeybek and Nazmi Çetin, each received four months for destroying or hiding evidence. The Mersin 5th High Criminal Court had given Şark ordinary life in May for killing a child with possible intent. The ministry said the execution was carried out because of “the heinous nature of the crime,” which it called one of the gravest major sins and “a severe act of filial disobedience.” The statement did not say when the killing took place or describe the court proceedings in detail. Photo: Deano87 / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 3.0 A jury in the High Court at Wellington has acquitted Pelikani Taukei’aho and Tauave Sue of murder and manslaughter over the death of Doreion Hard, who was shot in the Fresh Choice supermarket car park in Featherston on the afternoon of March 22, RNZ and the NZ Herald reported. Both had pleaded guilty to supplying cocaine. The court heard the pair drove south to sell cocaine to Hard, a deal each stood to make $4,000 from. Hard, who was high on methamphetamine, moved the meeting from Upper Hutt to Featherston and had no intention of paying. He and an associate confronted the two men at gunpoint, took two backpacks of drugs from their car and retreated to a red ute that blocked their exit, the Herald reported. As the ute pulled away, Hard fired a shot, and Taukei’aho emptied his revolver. One bullet hit the ute and fatally wounded Hard. The shots lasted three seconds. The defence said Hard fired first and Taukei’aho was returning fire, while the Crown argued the pair got out of their car to give chase and it was not lawful self-defence. Justice Andru Isac told jurors the men were on trial for what happened in the car park, not for being drug dealers. Photo: Luftschiffhafen / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0 A 43-year-old man went on trial before a jury at the Innsbruck regional court on Monday, accused of stabbing student Daniela Kammerer to death in the city’s Rapoldipark in the early hours of June 23, 2005, ORF Tirol and Kurier reported. “What was done to her is absolutely cruel. But I did nothing to her,” he told the court. The accused, a former fellow student of Kammerer’s from Lower Austria who now works as a sporting goods manager in Australia, travelled back voluntarily for the trial, ORF reported. He was arrested in 2013 and held for a few weeks, but the case was dropped then for lack of evidence. Prosecutors charged him in May after DNA on a cigarette butt found near the scene, a phone booth, was matched to him. Kammerer, who was almost 20, had been at a student party, as had the accused. A pensioner found her body. She had been stabbed twice, in the chest and back, and the knife was never found. Prosecutor Adelheid Steiner told jurors his DNA was also found under her fingernails, on her bicycle and as “signals” in a trace of her blood at the scene. A forensic expert said eight DNA traces on her body were compared against 37 people, with two matching the accused, Kurier reported. “Only the killer knows why she had to die,” Steiner said. He is presumed innocent. Photo: hh oldman / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY 3.0 Germany’s Federal Court of Justice has rejected the appeal of a 62-year-old man convicted of murdering a trans woman known as Angelique in a caravan in Hamburg’s Hammerbrook district in January 1983, making the verdict final, T-Online reported. The judges found no legal errors to his disadvantage, the court said. The Hamburg Regional Court sentenced the man on May 28, 2026, to six years and three months under juvenile law, because he was 18 at the time. According to the court, Angelique, 41, who offered sex work, approached him near the Reeperbahn on the night of Jan. 10 to 11, 1983, and drove him to her caravan in a car park, where he suddenly fired three shots from a revolver as she sat on a bed. She bled to death at the scene. He fled with a wallet, a savings book and other valuables, which were later found discarded near Hammerbrook S-Bahn station. The court found the bullets came from his revolver, and DNA was taken from a cigarette butt in the car’s ashtray in 2004. A detective reopened the case in 2025, and the man, who has been deaf since birth and has prior convictions, was arrested that November. Murder has had no statute of limitations in Germany since 1979. The attack happened on June 25 in the Saltivskyi district while the servicemen were delivering mobilisation notices. A 46-year-old serviceman was stabbed through the heart and died, and his colleague suffered surface cuts to his head and body. The attacker fled. Police said he then moved house and switched off his phone. Investigators watched hundreds of hours of camera footage and checked about 5,000 people who might have been witnesses or involved, Dumka reported. Witnesses described a man in glasses, so detectives canvassed opticians and eye clinics, which led them to the suspect. He was detained during a court-authorised search and, police said, admitted the stabbing under questioning. He has been served notice of suspicion of the premeditated murder of an official performing his duty and of violence against an official. He is presumed innocent. Spendley pleaded guilty shortly before his trial was due to start earlier this month. Mr Justice Paul McDermott passed sentence. Neighbours and family found Friel’s door open on Sunday, April 13, 2025, and discovered his body on the sofa, Det Sgt Grainne McLoone told the court. State Pathologist Dr Heidi Okkers found 35 sharp force injuries, three of them stab wounds, and said he died of multiple blunt force trauma to the head and lower limbs. Gardaí found a baseball bat, knives and a litter picker stained with his blood at the scene. Gardaí learned Spendley had spent part of the previous day with Friel. They found him in bed with blood on his hands, and blood on his shoes and a tobacco pouch matched Friel’s. The court heard Spendley, a musician with bipolar disorder and an alcohol addiction, had been acting erratically and that a sister had warned gardaí and his GP. Judge Robert Altham, the Recorder of Preston, ordered him to serve at least 16 years and five days before he can apply for parole. Haarith had admitted manslaughter but denied murder. CCTV showed Haarith brake and then drive off with Weller still on it. Weller fell and went under the car, and the front wheels went over him. He was dragged along the road as the car turned into Birch Street, and the rear wheels went over him before he came free. Haarith drove away, destroyed his phone and hid the Passat, which was later found abandoned on Barden Street, Lancashire Police said. A Madrid court had issued the protection order on Nov. 22, 2024, barring him from approaching or contacting her. Despite it, the two moved back in together and shared a room in a flat in Usera, the ruling says. In the early hours of Dec. 30, 2024, after she came home, an argument broke out over his jealousy and the fact that she had been out at a party. He picked up a 33-centimetre kitchen knife and stabbed her in several parts of her body, the court found. The case was heard by Section 27 of the court, which specialises in violence against women. Photo: Jeffreyrstroup / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0 Craig Alan Sipe, 63, of Akron, pleaded not guilty to aggravated murder in Stow Municipal Court on Monday, and a judge set his bond at $1 million cash, Cleveland 19 reported. He is accused of shooting Sharon Dorn, 61, of Stow, inside the Cuyahoga Falls Natatorium, a city-run gym and pool, on Sunday morning. Prosecutors asked for at least $1 million, calling Sipe “a threat not only to society but also to himself.” His lawyer pointed out that he turned himself in shortly after the shooting and asked for a reasonable bond. The judge said Sipe had little criminal history but that “this is a very serious charge.” The case will be bound over to the Summit County Court of Common Pleas. Officers were called to the building on Fourth Street at about 9:30 a.m. on Oct. 18 and found Dorn with a gunshot wound. She was taken to Summa Akron City Hospital and died at 9:51 a.m. Police said the gunman “targeted one victim” and fled. Sipe walked into the Cuyahoga Falls police station shortly afterward and was taken to the Summit County Jail, Cleveland 19 and CBS News reported. Police describe the shooting as “domestic-related” but have not said how Sipe and Dorn knew each other, citing respect for her family. Flowers have been left outside the Natatorium, which stayed closed on Monday, and the city is holding a drop-in support session there at 6 p.m. Wednesday with the Summit County Victim Assistance Program. Sipe is presumed innocent.
