Couple Beat Child In Home With 3 Young Kids Before Reporting Her Missing

A 25-year-old woman from Tennessee and her 21-year-old boyfriend are currently being charged with multiple felony crimes. They are accused of falsely reporting the disappearance of the woman’s 4-year-old daughter, when in reality, they had physically assaulted the child resulting in her death. The couple then proceeded to hide the girl’s body for several weeks before being discovered.
According to court records, a grand jury in Shelby County has issued true bills indicting Brittney Jackson and Jaylon Hobson. They are facing charges of first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse, with two counts each. Additionally, they are charged with abuse of a corpse, tampering with evidence, and false reporting in relation to the slaying of Sequoia Samuels.
On June 15th, the Memphis Police Department issued a City Watch Endangered Child Alert for Samuels after receiving a report from Jackson and Hobson regarding the girl’s disappearance. According to Jackson’s statement to investigators, she discovered that her apartment’s front door on Caldwell Avenue was open when she woke up around 7:55 a.m., and Sequoia was not inside the residence.
Sequoia, who was approximately 3 feet tall and weighed 30 pounds, had a feeding tube on the left side of her stomach. According to video doorbell footage from a neighbor, she was last observed leaving her residence and walking on the street at around 3 a.m. on Thursday morning [1].
On Friday morning, the police made an announcement that they had found the remains of a child in a dumpster located at the apartment complex where Jackson and Hobson lived. It is believed that these remains belong to Sequoia.
According to a probable cause affidavit, investigators believe that Sequoia actually died “several weeks” before Jackson and Hobson reported her missing.
During an interview with law enforcement, Jackson reportedly confessed to fabricating the report. She stated that Hobson had physically assaulted Sequoia on numerous occasions over a span of several weeks, ultimately resulting in her death.
According to the affidavit, after the previous attack, Sequoia became unresponsive. Hobson tried to revive her but was unsuccessful in bringing her back to consciousness. Jackson did not make any efforts to provide assistance to her daughter. Following this, Hobson placed Sequoia’s body in multiple garbage bags and kept them inside the house until June 15, 2023. Jackson then maintained the corpse for several weeks before disclosing that Sequoia had been disposed of in a garbage container on the East side of their apartment along with other trash cans.
According to the police, Jackson confirmed that the pictures of the garbage bag and container were indeed the ones in which they had placed Sequoia’s body.
While Sequoia’s body was reportedly kept in the residence for an extended period of time, there were also three additional children, aged 4, 5, and 6, living in the same home during that time.
Hobson consistently denied any connection to Sequoia’s vanishing or demise. He asserted that the last time he saw the girl alive was on June 11, 2023, a statement contradicted by law enforcement due to the significant decay of the human remains.
Jackson and Hobson are currently in custody at the Shelby County Detention Center. According to jail records, Jackson’s bond is set at $500,000 while Hobson’s bond is set at $50,000 [4].
